Course Description: This is the first year of the Filipino class series. Students will learn basic Filipino language and culture. They will learn how to speak, write, listen, and read in Filipino. The language and culture will be taught through activities such as singing, dancing, acting, watching videos, and earning culture points.

Course Objectives:

• Students will meet the state/district foreign language standards. The standards can be found using this link: http://www.cde.ca.gov/re/pn/fd/documents/foreign-language.pdf.
• Student will learn how to read, write, listen, and speak basic Filipino.
• Students will learn how to write simple sentences in Filipino.
• Students will learn how to use the Filipino language to communicate orally and in writing.
• Students will learn about Filipino culture by participating in cultural activities.

Course Requirements/Expectations

• Students attend class regularly and on time.
• Students stay on task.
• Students respect their classmates and teacher.
• Students help maintain a good learning environment in the classroom.
• Students go to tutoring if they are struggling with the concepts they are learning.
• Punctuality and submitting assignments with parent/guardian’s signature will be strictly enforced.

Note: I reserve the right to give after school detention instead of after class detention for students who consistently make poor choices. In addition, these students will receive a low citizenship grade, which will prevent them from participating in extra-curricular activities such as dances, field trips, lock-in, and ninth grade promotion ceremonies. Standards are also given for students who habitually don’t do homework, don’t bring the required materials to class, or chew gum in class. Not following rules consistently can affect student’s scholarship grade.

• Severe clause: Any student who engages in excessive class disruption, defiance, or fighting will be immediately sent to the office with a referral.

Pass Policy:

• Student planners were given to all students. The student must have his/her planner in order to go to restroom, office, library, etc. Students are not allowed to use another student’s planner.

Evaluation:

Students’ grades will be based on the following categories:

• Class work/ participation 20%
• Homework 10%
• Culture points 5%
• Attendance 5%
• Notebook 5%
• Quizzes (oral/written) 20%
• Exams (oral/written) 35%

90 – 100% A – Exceptional

80 – 89% B – Above Average

70 – 79% C – Average

60 – 69% D – Below Average

Below 60% F – Failure to meet course standards and proficiency.

Citizenship grade is based on students following the classroom rules. A student’s citizenship will be severely affected by habitual tardiness or truancy.

Projects:

Students will do projects in order to demonstrate their knowledge of the language and also learn the Filipino culture. One such project is called “Culture Points.” In this project, students earn points for participating in Filipino cultural events or activities. Another project involves students learning Filipino songs and dances. Students will have the opportunity to perform what they learned in a school assembly and/or a culture night. Student will also do a literature project, which will involve creating a video of a classic Filipino book. Most of the projects will be done in groups so it is very important for students learn how to work with each other.

• Notebook or binder for the course
• Pencils and/or black or blue pens
• Colored pencils or water based color markers

Optional Materials:

• English-Tagalog Dictionary (available at Tatak Filipino and some bookstores)
• Scissors
• Glue
