Course Description

The Learning Center is an intense academic course that helps students strengthen their skills in the areas of reading and written language. Instruction throughout the period is conducted in small groups and is designed to meet the needs of students who have Individualized Education Plans (IEP’s) and whose disabilities have impacted their acquisition of basic skills, language, and processing. This course will help equip and empower students with the necessary strategies and tools to access core curriculum, raise reading levels, and improve writing mechanics.

Behavior Guidelines

As a teacher, I have the right to teach and as a student your child has the right to learn. Should there be an individual in the class who limits any one person’s ability to do so, that student will first be given a warning. If the problem persists, a phone call will be made home to discuss the problem and a ½ hour after school detention will be issued for the next school day.

Classroom expectations and requirements

Students are expected to:

Enter and exit the classroom in a quiet orderly fashion
Be in their seat when the bell rings
Refer to the daily agenda and have all needed materials on desk at the start of class
Follow teacher given direction the first time
Use appropriate classroom language
Display respect for all staff, students, and school property

Homework Policy

Most assignments are designated for small group instruction and intense in class teaching. In the event that homework is assigned, it is expected to be turned in on the given date. Failure to do so will result in a parent phone call and the opportunity to make up the assignment after school or during lunch.

Materials Needed

Students are required to bring paper, pencil, a silent reading book, and their student planner each day. Should any other materials be needed, they shall be provided by the teacher.

Parent Communication

Parents are encouraged to contact the teacher via phone or e-mail when questions arise. In addition, I will be making monthly phone calls to update you on your child’s success. Progress reports will be sent home with you child every six weeks. The final report card will be mailed by the district at both the end of January 2009 and June 2009.
