Course Title: Physical Education

Program Description and objectives:
The Physical Education Department at Bell Middle School requires students to take responsibility for all aspects of their physical education. Outstanding attendance, wearing the proper uniform and putting forth exceptional effort every day are the most important objectives in our program. Furthermore, students must acquire specific social skills such as active listening , respect, and courtesy.
The beginning of each school year is spent making sure students understand their responsibilities and how to apply the appropriate social skills. These issues represent essential life lessons and are vital to the success of our PE program as well.
Once the foundation of responsibility and social skills is instilled, the main objective of the department is to improve the health and fitness levels of students, primarily through cooperative activity. The PE program consists of sports, games, and fitness exercises that focus on cardiovascular endurance, strength, and flexibility.

A major goal of the department is to encourage students to become physically active individuals who develop lifelong positive health and fitness habits.

Curriculum is based on the California State Standards for Physical Education. While the fitness components of endurance, strength, and flexibility are always a part of our program, listed below are specific sport and games.

Lacrosse, Hockey, Soccer, Tennis, Racquetball, Jump Rope, Volley Tennis, Scoops, Track and Field, Over The Line, Volleyball, Team Handball, Basketball...
Required items for PE:
*Regulation Bell PE shirt and shorts (can be purchased in Student Store)
*Athletic shoes with laces and socks
*Appropriate substitute PE clothes (Navy shorts and gray shirt)
Optional items:
*Sweatshirt and sweat pants- solid color (dark blue, gray, black)
*Sunscreen, lotion, deodorant, towel. Aerosol products are not allowed.

Clothing worn to school may not be worn for PE.
Students need to take PE uniforms home on fridays to get washed.
Substitute uniform must be kept in a bag in the student’s PE locker. it is only to be used in the event that a student forgets their regular uniform. Take only one uniform home to wash each week. One stays in the locker.

Name must be written on their uniforms for identification and protection of their property. Students are not allowed to borrow uniforms.

No personal items are to be brought out to class. Before students exit the locker room, they are responsible for securing all valuables in their locker, and making sure their locker door is shut and locked (turn the dial).

Grading policy:

Every day in PE is important. Student have the opportunity each day to earn points toward their final grade. At the end of each six week period, grades will be determined by the percentage of points earned out of the total possible. Once the percentage is calculated, a standard grading scale will be used. For example, a student who earns 27 out of 30 points will receive an A- for that grading period (27 out of 30+90%).

A successful Bell physical Education Student is expected to:

1. Arrive on time
2. Change clothes quickly and use the locker room properly
3. Be in appropriate uniform
4. Follow directions and be seated on roll number at the prescribed time.
5 Wear uniform and shoes properly while outside the locker room.
6. Perform all activities with exceptional levels and integrity.
7. Be an active listener who responds immediately and appropriately to instructions.
8. Demonstrate proper social skills at all times.
9. Take care of all PE equipment and PE facilities.
10. Respect the rights of all students and staff.
Absences:
Excused absences can be made up. See your teacher for details. Excessive absences (5+) in a six-week grading period will result in a grade drop.
Medical Excuses:
A parent note can excuse a student for up to three consecutive days, then a doctor’s note is required. Alternative modified make-up work to fit student needs.
