Program Description and Objectives:

The Physical Education Department at Bell Middle School puts considerable emphasis on student responsibility and accountability. Attendance, participation, and consistent daily effort are the keys to the success of our PE program. Important social skills such as active listening, respectful responses, and cooperation are expected at all times.

Students must learn and adhere to:

1.     Proper interaction skills

2.     Class and department rules

3.     PE student expectations

Continuous focus will be on improving the physical fitness levels of our students through individual, cooperative, and competitive activities. The objective is to increase the studentŐs cardiovascular endurance, strength, and flexibility.

The number one goal of the department is to instill the value of becoming physically active individuals who develop and maintain life-long positive health and fitness habits.

á       Students are expected to take their PE uniform home at the end of the week to be washed. Uniform must be brought back on Monday so student can suit-up and participate in class.

á       The substitute uniform should be kept in a plastic bag in the PE locker. It is only to be used on a temporary basis. (Take one uniform home to wash each week, and leave the other uniform at school in your locker.)

á       StudentsŐ name must be written on the uniforms for the purpose of identification and protection of their property.  Students are not allowed to borrow uniforms from other students.

Personal Items and Backpacks

No personal items are to be brought out to class. Lock up your valuables. Make sure your locker door is shut and secure (turn the dial).

Absences and Medical Excuses

Excessive absences (5+) in a six-week grading period will result in a lower grade. Excused absences can be made up.  See your teacher for details. A parent note can excuse a student for              up to three consecutive days, then a doctorŐs note is required.

Grading Criteria:  In Physical Education class, PE means Participation & Effort.

All students are expected to earn a grade of ŇBÓ or higher.  Do these 3 things:

  1. Suit-up and Participate fully
  2. Respond to Instructions
  3. Keep Your Heart Rate Up (120+)

Expectations for Physical Education Students

Fitness First, Sports Second. Better fitness is our top priority, ahead of sports participation. Students are expected to actively engage in fitness and exercise daily.  This is the basis for your grade.

During fitness and sports activities -  no stopping, standing still, or sitting.  Keep your feet moving and your heart pounding at all times.  Take your pulse often – feel the beat.

Our target heart rate goal is 120 -150 beats per minute for up to 30- 35 minutes. This will take some time to achieve, but every student can do it. Generally, young teens have a resting heart rate of 60-70. Doubling the rate will keep you in the target zone, above 120.

Make every effort to be in the front half of the class during all running/walking (aerobic) activities, and when moving with the class from one area to another.  A grade of ŇCÓ means Ňaverage,Ó or in the middle. Stay with the pack, never in back. Walking slowly way behind the class will not be tolerated, and will not earn you a passing grade.

Students should drink plenty of water throughout the day, especially before and after exercise. Be sure to get a drink on your way out to class.  DonŐt count on wandering off to the drinking fountain during class time.
