The board made the following appointments 5-0, with effective dates to be determined:

TIMOTHY ALLEN – to Executive Director, Collaborative, the City Heights Educational Collaborative

JILL DOWER – from Teacher, School of Creative and Performing Arts, to Vice Principal, Serra High School, Office of the Assistant Superintendent for High Schools

GILBERT GUTIERREZ – from Principal, Washington Elementary, to Principal, Florence Griffith Joyner Elementary, Office of the Area Superintendent K-8, Area 3

S. SCOTT THOMASON – from Dean of Students, Patrick Henry High, to Vice Principal, School of Creative and Performing Arts, Office of Secondary School Innovation

VIRA VILLAREAL – from Legal Specialist, Labor Relations Office, to Operations Specialist, Chief Administrative Office

The board made the following appointments 3-2, with Jackson and Lee voting no, and with effective dates to be determined:

ANA SHAPIRO – from Lead Teacher, Cabrillo High School, Long Beach Unified School District, to Vice Principal, Lincoln High Educational Complex, Executive Office of Secondary School Innovation.

Major agenda items included the following:

The board voted 5-0 to:

Approve the High Priority Schools Grant Program (HPSGP) Implementation application for 12 district schools.

Approve the 2007-08 Plan for Title I Eligibility Ranking and Participation

Adopt Memorandums of Understanding regarding the impact on central office employees of a 12-month modified Reduced Work Year (RWY) during the 2006-2007 winter break between the district and the:
  • California School Employees Association, Chapter 724 (Operations-Support Services)
  • California School Employees Association, Chapter 788 (Office-Technical and Business Services)
Adopt Memorandums of Understanding with San Diego Education Association regarding:
  • Lincoln High School being considered as an Academic Performance Index 1-3 School
  • Teacher moves at John Muir School during June 2005
Adopt a Contract Waiver Request by SDUSD requesting an extension to the deadline of February 1 for sites to complete decision-making process of elimination of existing bargaining unit positions.

Appoint Bennett Peji to the Independent Citizen’s Oversight Committee (ICOC) for a three year period ending December 2009.

The board voted 4-1, with Jackson voting no:

Retain 8th grade students with two or more Fs in core subjects beginning this school year, 2006-07. Parents will have the right to decline that their child be retained but the student will then be assigned to the 9th grade intervention program at the high school.

Recognitions and presentations:

The Board voted 5-0 to approve the Resolution in the Matter of the Recognition of February 5-9, 2007, as National School Counseling Week.

The Board voted 5-0 to approve the Resolution in the Matter of the Recognition of February 12, 2007, as National African American Parent Involvement Day (NAAPID).

The Board voted 5-0 to approve the Resolution in the Matter of the Recognition of February 2007 as Black History Month.
