The board made the following appointments/reassignments 5-0, with effective dates to be determined:

Irwin, Michelle – from Principal, Pacific Beach Middle School, to Principal, Thurgood Marshall Middle School.

Major agenda items:

The Board voted 5-0 to approve:

  • Agreement for Employment of Interim Superintendent with William Kowba, effective January 1, 2008, and continuing until termination of the agreement in accordance with its terms.

The Board voted 4-0 with de Beck absent to approve:

  • The Contract Waiver Request by the San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD) of the San Diego Education Association (SDEA) Collective Negotiations Contract to Section 25.5.2. requesting an extension to the deadline of February 1 for sites to complete the decision making process for the elimination of existing bargaining unit positions. In conjunction with the requested extension to timelines in Section 25.5.2, SDUSD is also requesting an extension of the February 1 deadline in Section 8.6.3., in accordance with Section 3547.5 of the California Government Code and Section 1031 of the Bylaws of the Board of Education.
  • The Tentative Agreement between the San Diego Unified School District and the California School Employees Association (CSEA), Chapter 788 Office-Technical Business Services (OTBS), as the exclusive representative of the Classified Bargaining Unit, for the 2007-08 reopener negotiations of Article 7 Wages and Article 9 Health and Welfare, in accordance with Section 3547.5 of the California Government Code and Section 1031 of the Bylaws of the Board of Education.
  • The Tentative Agreement between the San Diego Unified School District and the California School Employees Association (CSEA), Chapter 759 Paraeducators (PARA), as the exclusive representative of the Classified Bargaining Unit, for the 2007-08 reopener negotiations of Article 7 Wages and Article 9 Health and Welfare, in accordance with Section 3547.5 of the California Government Code and Section 1031 of the Bylaws of the Board of Education.
  • The Tentative Agreement and the 2007-10 successor Memorandum of Understanding between the San Diego Unified School District and the San Diego City Schools Police Officers Association (POA), as the employee organization representing the School Police Services Unit, in accordance with Section 3547.5 of the California Government Code and Section 1031 of the Bylaws of the Board of Education.
  • The Tentative Agreement and the 2007-09 successor Memorandum of Understanding between the San Diego Unified School District and the Administrators Association San Diego City Schools (AASD), as the employee group representing Managers, Supervisors, and Confidentials, in accordance with Section 3547.5 of the California Government Code and Section 1031 of the Bylaws of the Board of Education.

2008-09 Plan for Title I Eligibility Ranking and Participation

  • A motion to approve the staff recomendations was defeated, 3-2, with Acle and Jackson in favor, and de Beck, Lee and Nakamura in opposition.
  • A motion requesting that staff bring back to the next meeting information on how Title I funds are spent at each school, as well as other information, was approved 3-2, with de Beck, Lee and Nakamura in favor, and Acle and Jackson in opposition.

The Board voted 5-0 to approve:

  • Recognition of February 2008 as Black History Month
  • Recognition of February 11, 2008, as National African American Parent Involvement Day (NAAPID)
