Important: Grade 1 has been established as the retention grade at the elementary level. At the end of the school year, first grade students who do not meet the promotion criteria will be retained and receive an accelerated instructional program. However, students may be retained at any grade level if they are performing significantly below grade level and have not participated in the available support and intervention opportunities as prescribed in this contract.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The student will participate in the support programs planned by the teachers and parent; complete all assignments to the best of ability; ask for help when needed.

The teacher will provide instruction based on student need; suggest ways that parents can support learning at home; communicate student’s academic progress to parent on an ongoing basis.

The administrator will provide instructional leadership to support the strategies outlined in the learning contract; ensure extended learning opportunities; seek out additional resources to meet special academic needs.

The parent/guardian will ensure that the child attends school and participates in recommended extended learning programs; provide a regular time, place and supervision for homework completion; hold high expectations for the child’s success and regularly monitor his/her academic progress with school.

Students who do not participate in available extended learning opportunities and do not meet the performance criteria will be at risk of retention.

Teacher(s): Prior to the last six weeks of school (elementary), schedule a meeting with the parent/guardian (and student, if appropriate) to discuss the student’s progress and your decision concerning promotion/retention. If the parent/guardian does not attend the meeting, ensure that they are notified in writing of your decision. (The parent/guardian must be notified of your decision two weeks prior to the last day of instruction.)
