Environmental Grant for High School Students
Do you know a student with an innovative solution to protect the environment? Planet Connect is looking for creative ideas and actions to fix an environmental problem in our schools and local community. A $1,000 grant and a local environmental internship are available for high school students. Visit the website. The application deadline is October 30.

Character Development School Poster & Essay Contest
YMCA of San Diego County and SDG&E invite K-12 students to participate in an essay or poster contest, which asks them to write or draw about one of the YMCA values: caring, honesty, respect or responsibility.  Students are awarded based on grade level and prizes range from Zoo/Wild Animal Park season passes to a full year YMCA membership. U.S. Department of Education’s Video Contest for Students
The U.S. Department of Education invites students to submit videos for the "I Am What I Learn!" contest. The contest asks each student to lay out the reasons education is so important to his or her future. Any student with a clear vision of where their education and career training can take them is encouraged to submit a two-minute video. Participating students have the chance to win $1,000. Visit I am what I learn for more information. The deadline for submissions is Monday, November 2.

Congressional Page Opportunity on Capitol Hill
Congresswoman Susan Davis will select a page from the 53rd District for the upcoming 2010 spring semester, January 24-June 4, 2010. Pages serve as support staff for Members of Congress, assisting Members on the floor of the House of Representatives and disseminating legislative material around the Capitol complex. Only 72 students are chosen from a nationwide pool for each term. To qualify as a House Page, applicants must be high school juniors, at least sixteen years of age, and have maintained a minimum GPA of 3.0. Pages who serve during the school year attend the House of Representatives Page School, where they continue their eleventh grade studies as well as learn about House of Representatives operations. Students can apply here for this once in a lifetime opportunity by Monday, November 9.

13th Annual Student Writing for Literacy Essay Contest
Students in grades 4, 8 and 10 who attend a school served by the San Diego Public Library system have until Thursday, November 19, to enter the essay contest sponsored by the San Diego Public Library and San Diego Unified Library Media Teachers. University of San Diego Essay Contest: Why Character Matters
USD’s School of Leadership and Education Sciences invites students in grades 4-12 to reflect on and write about experiences related to matters of honesty, courage, respect, responsibility, self-discipline and other character traits. Students are eligible for cash awards, ranging from $50 to $100, with special gifts for sponsoring teachers of winning students. The Next Star Classical Music Talent Competition
San Diego’s Orchestra Nova announces the first classical music talent competition ever held where the winner will be selected by the concert audience and the Internet community. The competition is open to amateur classical musicians (no age limit) in San Diego whose principal source of income does not come from public performances of classical music. C-SPAN StudentCam Documentary Competition
C-SPAN announces a call for entries for the 2010 StudentCam documentary competition. This year’s themes focus on one of America’s greatest strengths, or a challenge America faces today. A total of $50,000 in cash prizes will be awarded to winning students in grades 6-12. The deadline for entries is Wednesday, January 20, 2010. For more information, visit http://www.studentcam.org/.

Engineering Scholarships
City of San Diego, Engineering and Capital Projects has combined forces with the American Council of Engineering Companies to offer scholarships for high school students interested in engineering.  Scholarships of up to $1,500 each in the fields of Civil, Geotechnical, Structural, Electrical, Environmental, and Mechanical Engineering and Land Surveying.  Scholarships are for high school seniors. LAB Students
So you want to become a lawyer?  On November 7, Cal-SOAP, in partnership with USD, will be hosting an event called “So You Want to be… A Lawyer.”  Learn from professional lawyers, law students, and law school admissions officers about how you can prepare for a career in Law.  Download the application from the “Events” section of the Cal-SOAP website:  http://www.sandiegocalsoap.com.  APPLICATION DOES NOT GUARANTEE ADMISSION.  Interest form due by October 23, 2009.

Work Permits
All students under the age of 18 must have work permits if they are employed (babysitting and yard work do not require a work permit).  Students must be in the 10th grade or higher, have a 2.0 GPA, and satisfactory attendance in all classes (unverified absences need to be cleared).  Applications for work permits may be obtained from Ms. Elisa Moreno if you are in LAB or CHAMPS or Ms. Melissa Woods if you are in MVAS or IDEA at Crawford Educational Complex.  For details on work permits visit:  www.sandi.net/career/wp.html.
