Ethics Training

California law (AB 1234) requires governing body members, elected officials or locally designated employees in local jurisdictions to receive specialized ethics training. Currently, school district officials are not among those required to take this training. Nonetheless, school district officials are subject to the provisions of AB 1234 as well as other government codes (notably Government Code section 1090 involving contracts—see conflicts of interest).

The laws can be complex and the penalties for violations are, in some cases, severe. School board members and others in school district leadership roles are therefore advised to take advantage of the free AB 1234 online ethics training course developed by the Institute for Local Government and the Fair Political Practices Commission and approved by the Attorney General's Office.
