Overview
Instructional materials is defined by Education Code Section 60010 as "all materials that are designed for use by pupils and their teachers as a learning resource and help pupils acquire facts, skills, or opinions or develop cognitive processes. Instructional materials may be printed or nonprinted, and may include textbooks, technology-based materials, other educational materials, and tests." The primary functions of the Instructional Materials Department are to:
- Oversee the review, selection, adoption, ordering, distribution, and monitoring of instructional materials used in the district's K-12 programs.
- Work with subject-area specialists to establish instructional materials adoption committees.
- Work with instructional materials adoption committees to negotiate multi-year (life-of-the-adoption) contracts with approved publishers while meeting state and district edicts.
- Assist school sites with the process of ordering and receiving adopted materials.
- Maintains display collection of district adopted materials for grades K-12.
- Parents and/or community members who would like to participate in the adoption process, please contact the Instructional Materials Department at (619) 725-7209 or instmatlmail@sandi.net
Collection of K-12 Adopted Materials
The Instructional Materials Department maintains a display collection of district-adopted materials for grades K-12 at the Instructional Media Center (IMC). The collection is located near the rear of the IMC and is used by teachers, parents, curriculum staff, and other site personnel to examine/review pupil and teacher materials.
While materials may not be checked out, the collection serves an important function by housing the instructional materials adopted by the district in one central location.
Electronic Resources
The links below provide information about the electronic resources available that support currently adopted instructional materials. Contact the classroom teacher for specific access information when necessary.
Instructional Materials Adoption Process
For both new and existing instructional materials, the following review process should take place on a regular basis:
- Evaluation of instructional materials for positive representation of women and men, individuals with disabilities, the aged, and ethnic group contributions throughout all course-content areas.
- Elimination, when possible, of all materials which do not accurately portray ethnic groups, women, or men in their leadership roles and occupations without demeaning or stereotyping their roles in society.
- Ensure that materials conform to state curriculum frameworks and standards, and reflect district goals and expectations for teaching and learning.
Instructional Materials Adoption Packet (IMAP)
The instructional materials adoption committee chairperson must complete an IMAP for each course scheduled for adoption. Separate instructions are included for each page of the IMAP, according to the format for that page. The information you provide on each of the pages will be used to prepare the report to the Board of Education recommending new textbooks and instructional materials for adoption.
The Education Code and Procedure No. 4050
require that all instructional materials that are intended for use on a districtwide basis or in one or more schools must comply with the legal criteria for instructional materials. This regulation applies to materials adopted as basic or supplementary textbooks, library books and multimedia materials recommended for the Instructional Media Center (IMC), and district-produced instructional materials and teacher guides.
