Overview
The Family Friendly Schools Initiative helps to make sure that all of our schools are places where families and community members feel welcomed, informed, and included. Students, parents and teachers all stand to benefit when families are engaged and connected with their schools.
Students do better in school, improve their attendance and are happier with the school climate.
Parents see increased student achievement, and develop positive and productive relationships with school staff. They have increased confidence in the school and with staff and instructional programs.
Teachers see increased student achievement, and increased parental support. They are active partners in the improved school climate.
Awareness
Attention is increased to the kind of experience we are providing families and community members at the schools.
Super Service Commendation cards and boxes are in place at each participating school, so that parents can let us know when a staff member has made extra effort to be respectful, courteous and helpful. Those employees will receive special district recognition.
Training
Essential and elective training is provided to school staff on the best ways to create a welcoming environment, and to identify and leverage available resources that will help enhance parent engagement. These courses will include three themes:
- Welcoming - Families are made to feel at home, comfortable and a part of the school community.
- Honoring - Family members are respected, validated and affirmed for any type of involvement or contribution they make.
- Connecting - School staff and families put children at the center and connect on education issues of common interested designed to improve educational opportunities for children.
Certification
After completing training, schools will be able to apply to be certified as Family Friendly Schools. These schools
will receive Board recognition, and will be honored with a special, commemorative Family Friendly School flag.
Super Service Commendation
If you have received outstanding service from a school employee, we
want to know about it so that we can recognize his or her contribution towards our goal of excellence in customer
service. Super Service Commendation boxes and cards are available at each of our participating schools. Simply fill
out the form and drop it in the commendation box. You can also submit a commendation
using our online form.
Commendations are shared with the Parent, Student and Community Engagement Office so that those employees and schools who make an extra effort to provide friendly assistance to parents can be recognized at the district level.
