Southeast Asian, Pacific Islander and Somali Program

Overview
The Southeast Asian, Pacific Islander and Somali Program provides educational services to Southeast Asian (Cambodian, Hmong, Lao, and Vietnamese) Pacific Islander and Somali families. The Liaison also helps facilitate the needs of various educational organizations such as the Lao and Vietnamese American PTAs, Hmong Education Association, Lao and Asian Pacific Islander Education Councils, The Union of Pan Asian Communities (UPAC), Horn of Africa and Somali Family Service Center, The Pazzaz, Inc and the Center for Parent Involvement In Education (CPIE) for the New ERAA back-to-school conference.

Aligned with the San Diego Parent University program, the Liaison provides parents and schools with workshops and training in topics specifically designed for Southeast Asian, Pacific Islander and Somali families.

The goal of the program is to increase the engagement and involvement of Southeast Asian, Pacific Islander and Somali parents in their children's education. These parents value education and have a high respect for schools and teachers, but due to cultural factors, often feel it is not appropriate to be involved with their children's school or teacher. Therefore, the objective is to reinforce their values and beliefs in education, but at the same time to provide information about the American school system and the value of parent involvement.
