Overview
Sex education and HIV prevention is part of the required Health Education Program for students in San Diego Unified School District. The Sex Education and HIV Prevention Program is part of the Physical Education, Health and Athletics Department. Funding for the program is provided by a grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Comprehensive sex education programs are implemented in grades 6, 8 and 10/11. In addition, HIV prevention lessons are taught in grades 9 - 12. All programs follow California Education Codes. A Sex Education Advisory Committee (SEAC) is in place to review all lessons and support materials used in the classroom. Sex education includes more than the prevention of teenage pregnancy and sexually transmitted disease.
The primary goals are to:
- Deliver accurate information to students
- Provide students a way to examine their attitudes and beliefs
- Assist students in the development of interpersonal skills
- Promote responsible behavior
