Overview
The San Diego Unified School District’s Audiology Program is designed to provide audiological assessments, direct consultative services to students with a hearing impairment or with an auditory processing disorder; and to support parents, staff and other district offices in efforts of providing students equal access to district curriculum and programs.  Assessment services provided include: 1) audiological evaluations for students with known or suspected hearing loss; 2) auditory processing disorder (APD) assessments for students with known or suspected auditory processing difficulties as part of a multidisciplinary team assessment; 3) hearing screenings for preschool and school age students in a special education program or being referred for special education services, and for difficult to test students in regular education.   The Audiologist also can make recommendations regarding the use of and proper fit of hearing aids, cochlear implants, Assistive Listening Devices, as well as for individual FM systems, group FM systems and sound field FM or Infra-red systems.


When to Refer a Student

1.  For an Audiologic Evaluation/Hearing Screening (in a Sound Conditioned Booth)
Students in general education, grades K through 12 and Special Education students from the Infant Program through age 22 are assessed if the following conditions are evident:

  • The student has a known or suspected hearing loss.
  • The student has failed two hearing screenings performed at the school site.
  • The student needs  verification of normal hearing post middle ear surgery.
  • The student has been referred for Special Education Services.
  • Difficult to test students.

If the student meets this criteria, please print, fill out and fax (619-497-3521) or mail the Application for Audiological Screening/Evaluation to the Ed Center, Annex 17.

 
2.  For an Auditory Processing Disorder Assessment
Students in general education, grades K through 12 being referred for Special Education Services and students in grades K through 12 already receiving Special Education services are not assessed if the following conditions are evident:

  • The student already has an identified auditory processing disorder.
  • The student has mental retardation.
  • The student has a hearing impairment.
  • The student has significant articulation deficits.
  • The student has significant behavior problems.
  • The student is not an English learner.

Auditory Processing Evaluation Referral Procedures
Instructions
:

  1. Case manager completes the Request for Auditory Processing Evaluation Form
  2. Auditory Processing Evaluation referral form and recent Psychological, Academic, Speech/Language reports are sent to: Eugene Brucker Education Center, Audiology Assessment Center 4100 Normal St. Annex 17, San Diego, Ca 92103
  3. Audiologist reviews the records and contacts the case manager and parents.
  4. Audiologist completes an assessment plan in Encore when appropiate.

3.  For fitting an amplification system

Students from the Infant Program through age 22 receiving Special Education Services with an Individual Education Plan (IEP) for hearing impairment or students in grade K through 12 receiving Special Education Services with an IEP for an Auditory Processing  Disorder.
