Sadly, the Energy/Utility Management Section is unable to support recycling efforts to the extent we'd like at this time. We do strongly encourage schools to do what they can to continue recycling programs at their sites and to that end we have made this webpage as useful as possible.

San Diego Unified School District recycles! If you would like to initiate or expand your school's recycling program, please contact the District's Energy/Utility Management Office at (858) 627-7376. We have the resources and expertise to assist with your school's recycling program.

Assembly Bill 939 requires all cities in the state of California to reduce their waste by 50%. Since the District encompasses a large area within the City of San Diego, we play a key role in helping the City to meet their goals. After all, San Diego Unified School District produces 1% (18,000 tons per year) of the City's total waste.

SDUSD cares about the environment and will continue to maintain and expand the active waste management program. Materials recovered for recycling at District sites consist primarily of:

Paper Recycling Program	Beverage Container Recycling
A 2001 audit of SDUSD trash bins revealed that 59% of the waste stream is paper. Recycling this paper is the right thing to do, both financially and for the environment. Since that time, thousands of tons of paper have been recycled and kept out of the landfill.	Beverage container recycling is now available at all schools in the District. Acceptable materials include water bottles, aluminum cans, plastic juice bottles, soda bottles, glass bottles and tuna/soup cans.
Beverage Container FAQ's	Green Waste Recycling Program
This program will help the schools and administrative sites promote their recycling programs and help them earn money from recyclables collected.	Grass and yard trimmings from schools and other district facilities are collected and put in 3 yard dumpsters for collection by our waste hauler. Our program has allowed the District to divert 458 tons of green waste from the landfill per year.
Paper Recycling Bin Order Form	Books and Curriculum
Form used to order more bins for your site.	The Energy Utility Management Section of Maintenance and Operations has obtained a donation of 1,100 books (an estimated $19,000 value) from Keep California Beautiful, Inc. The books, titled "The Day the Trash Came Out to Play," by David Beadle, contain a story incorporating themes of resource conservation and recycling.
Contests	PowerPoint Presentations on District Recycling Programs
The district's Energy/Utility Management Office, in conjunction with Keep California Beautiful, is conducting a contest to help promote recycling. This contest is open to all staff members, including volunteers, who pledge to recycle paper in San Diego City Schools facilities. Every month on the 15th , two names will be drawn from the pledge cards submitted.	Powerpoint presentations that the district has used to promote its recycling program.
