San Diego City Schools Recycling Efforts

The Energy Utility Management Section of Maintenance and Operations has obtained a donation of 1,100 books (an estimated $19,000 value) from Keep California Beautiful, Inc. The books, titled "The Day the Trash Came Out to Play," by David Beadle, contains a story incorporating themes of resource conservation and recycling. This book can help third grade teachers address the San Diego City Schools (SDUSD) performance standard regarding garbage reduction. Furthermore, our office's Teacher on Special Assignment has developed a lesson plan for the book. Click here to get a copy of the lesson plan. A set of books has been distributed to all single track, year-round schools in early July, 2004. Click here to see photos of our book distribution.

The Energy/Utility Management Office of SDUSD is committed to help the District achieve a 60% recycling rate. This book is a component of our plan to reduce waste and recycle by educating our students about the effects of litter and recycling in our environment. If you would like copies of the book, please contact Energy/Utility Management Office at (858) 627-7376 or acalbow@sandi.net.
