In the first phase of the project, a 40-gallon Biodiesel production unit was installed at San Diego High School. Subsequent phases will expand this program to include other SDUSD High Schools providing students with solid project-based learning opportunities.

The Biodiesel produced by the students has been used to fuel several vehicles, diesel pressure washers, and generators. After sufficient testing, plans are in place to augment the fuel supply for some Food Service vehicles, thus "closing the loop" by powering the trucks that bring the oil to the schools in the first place.
