In 1776, Betsy Ross sewed the first American flag, shown above. In 1777, the Continental Congress resolved that the flag of the United States will be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white and that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation. The song "My Country, 'Tis of Thee" was written in 1831 by Reverend Samuel F. Smith, an American minister and writer. The song was first sung in Boston in 1832.
