Music Focus: The Crown Point Junior Music Academy will feature a dedicated program that allows students the opportunity to acquire a strong background in music, with an emphasis in Suzuki violin. Two options for Music instruction will be available:

  1. The Suzuki method of music study (K-5) incorporates nine elements: Expectation of Success, Early Beginning, Listening, Nurturing, Social Environment, Parent Teacher, Repetition, Performance, Review and Natural Reading. Suzuki parents continuously encourage their child’s musical effort and are involved in the private and group lessons that take place2 times per week. Parent attendance at all music lessons is mandatory for the preschool child through second grade child. Regular group classes (two fifteen minute small group lessons and one forty minute group lesson per week) and daily listening to recordings of the repertoire being studied are keys to the success of the program. At grade three, parents are encouraged but no longer required to attend student lessons as students continue their Suzuki study.
  2. A sequential, standards-based music program (preK-5) will be available for all students at Crown Point, including all PreK students and those students in grades 1-2 whose parents are not able to meet the Suzuki attendance requirements. The program will include the following music components:
Preschool through Grade 5 Orff music program
Kindergarten through Grade 2 Keys to Achievement
Grade 3 Recorder instruction
Grade 4 Exploratory music program
Grade 5 Violin

Students in grades 3-5 may continue in the program or they may elect to switch to the Suzuki method.

Academic Program:
Engaging and in-depth music instruction taught by highly qualified instructors will be fully integrated into a rigorous academic program. Classroom teachers will enhance the academic program through the integration of music in social studies, literature, geography, science, and other art disciplines. Literacy in the content areas will be enhanced with a variety of writing and research projects. Music performances, concerts and off-campus activities will be developed in collaboration with Oak Park Music Conservatory. All students will be expected to participate in the annual Elementary Honors Orchestra starting in grade 4.

Preschool Component:
The preschool program will form the basis for future enrollment at Crown Point Junior Music Academy. The program will be a full-day, non-fee based program. Students will be selected into the preschool program by the same enrollment process as the regular K-5 program.

Features:

  • Academically rigorous curriculum
  • Developmentally appropriate music instruction
  • Use of district-provided instruments
  • Optional small-group and individual Suzuki violin lessons (K-5)
  • Performances and events by noted musical talent throughout San Diego
  • Transportation for students outside the Pacific Beach Middle School area
