The
John Muir Magnet School for Global Citizenship offers a curriculum designed to build responsible and productive global citizens who are prepared to become leaders in their community. the K-12 grade span and small class size promotes a family atmosphere in a personalized learning environment.
Through Paideia learning strategies, students are challenged to analyze, to question, and to think critically. Cultural awareness is stressed through an expanded social science program that includes communication and collaboration with students in other counties. School-wide programs address the skills and knowledge needed to understand worldwide traditions.
True to our name, John Muir also addresses the challenges of protecting and enhancing the environment.
Our
key features at the elementary level:
• Inquiry–based, hands-on science
• Grades 4-6 have instrumental music
• Professional librarian and PE instruction

Current Events:
John Muir celebrated SummerFest with special guests from the World-Beat Center. OMO CHE Afro-Cuban performers offered music, dance and culture to Muir students at lunchtime. Then all K-12 classes showcased "The Greatest Parks on Earth", as they shared 16 different countries from around the world.

Students attended a school-wide field trip to the Marine Corps Air Station at Miramar ( a long time partnership of Muir's). They attended 6 different tours including the Helicopter Unit, the Flying Leatherneck Museum, the Aviation Survival Training Center, the F-18 Squadron, and the C-130 Unit. Then individual Marines lead some fun activities before enjoying lunch on base.

Once back on campus, a school-wide Paideia Seminar was held on the theme of teamwork and loyalty. To learn more about Paideia visit the National Paideia Center at www.paideia.org
This week 9th grade classes took a trip to Torrey Pines Reserve for a practical exam testing their knowledge and skills from earth science and their GLOPED class. The exam involved the use of GPS devices, digital photos and the GPS reading of geological features.

John Muir’s program equips students with the knowledge, skills, and values to achieve academic excellence through a focus on global responsibilities. Utilizing Paideia learning strategies, technology, and project-based learning, we prepare our students to become life-long learners who collaborate effectively, work creatively, and think critically to benefit themselves, their communities and the world.
SMART Goals: How will we mark our progress toward our vision?
•By July 2009, a minimum of 44.5% of Muir students will attain proficiency or better in English Language Arts, as measured by the Spring 2009 CST. The percentage of English Learners attaining proficiency of better, as measured by the CST, will increase from 14.6% to 21%. The percentage of Special Education students attaining proficiency or better will increase from 24.1% to 28%.
• By July 2009, a minimum of 43.5% of Muir students will attain proficiency or better in Mathematics, as measured by the Spring 2009 CST. The percentage of English Learners attaining proficiency or better, as measured by the CST, will increase from 23.4% to 28%. The percentage of Special Education students attaining proficiency or better will increase from 26.7% to 30%.
• By September 2009, Muir’s K-12 student enrollment will be at least 400 students.
• By June 2010, 100% of Muir teachers will implement a minimum of two Paideia coached projects in their major teaching area, as measured by course syllabus and principal observation.
• By July 2009, at least 95% of all 12th grade students will have scored proficient or above on both the ELA and Mathematics portions of the CAHSEE and will have completed the required courses needed for graduation.
