Muir has moved to a new larger, permanent site at 4431 Mt. Herbert Avenue in the Clairemont area! They are receiving a 2.5 million dollar renovation that includes school-wide classroom and playground transformations, two new science labs and a K-12 library with plenty of room to think, read, write and present student team and individual inquiry projects!


 

The John Muir Magnet School for Global Citizenship offers a curriculum designed to build responsible and productive global citizens who are prepared to become leaders in their community. the K-12 grade span and small class size promotes a family atmosphere in a personalized learning environment.

Through Paideia learning strategies, students are challenged to analyze, to question, and to think critically. Cultural awareness is stressed through an expanded social science program that includes communication and collaboration with students in other counties. School-wide programs address the skills and knowledge needed to understand worldwide traditions.

True to our name, John Muir also addresses the challenges of protecting and enhancing the environment.

Our key features at the elementary level:

• Inquiry–based, hands-on science
• Grades 4-6 have instrumental music
• Professional librarian and PE instruction
• Separate play area for primary
• Separate lunch time for elementary

Mission Statement

The mission of John Muir School is to create a community of empowered learners who are productive global citizens.

Vision Statement

John Muir’s program equips students with the knowledge, skills, and values to achieve academic excellence through a focus on global responsibilities. Utilizing Paideia learning strategies, technology, and project-based learning, we prepare our students to become life-long learners who collaborate effectively, work creatively, and think critically to benefit themselves, their communities and the world.

SMART Goals: How will we mark our progress toward our vision?

By July 2009, a minimum of 44.5% of Muir students will attain proficiency or better in English Language Arts, as measured by the Spring 2009 CST. The percentage of English Learners attaining proficiency of better, as measured by the CST, will increase from 14.6% to 21%. The percentage of Special Education students attaining proficiency or better will increase from 24.1% to 28%.

• By July 2009, a minimum of 43.5% of Muir students will attain proficiency or better in Mathematics, as measured by the Spring 2009 CST. The percentage of English Learners attaining proficiency or better, as measured by the CST, will increase from 23.4% to 28%. The percentage of Special Education students attaining proficiency or better will increase from 26.7% to 30%.

• By September 2009, Muir’s K-12 student enrollment will be at least 400 students.

• By June 2010, 100% of Muir teachers will implement a minimum of two Paideia coached projects in their major teaching area, as measured by course syllabus and principal observation.

• By July 2009, at least 95% of all 12th grade students will have scored proficient or above on both the ELA and Mathematics portions of the CAHSEE and will have completed the required courses needed for graduation.

The Bringing the Rain to Kapiti Plain

Students design an Italian Fountain
Students create posters with John Muir quotations and appropriate illustrations for Earth Day.
 
Library Essay Contest
Using the NEO pads and the computer lab, students will read and analyze archetypal stories from various cultures; write an analysis of the archetypal characters, the plot and the theme; and do a formal presentation to the class of their essay.
Students research a South American Country of their choice

Students know, derive, and solve problems involving the perimeter, circumference, area, volume, lateral area, and surface area of common geometric figures.
