San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts Magnet is a school for students with a strong interest in the arts along with the discipline and commitment to succeed.

San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts Magnet students develop and refine techniques while discovering and enhancing their own individual style. SCPA offers a balanced curriculum in a multicultural setting. A rigorous academic program is offered in conjunction with comprehensive study in the visual and performing arts taught by teachers who are active arts professionals as well as credentialed educators. Students can take advantage of classes in choral music (with an emphasis on classical literature and vocal jazz as well as performing and tours), dance (Irish, Mexican and Spanish, modern, jazz, theatre, tap and ballet), drama, instrumental music (band, wind ensemble, chamber and symphony orchestras, jazz band, and theory/harmony), musical theatre, piano, technical theatre, video production, and visual arts (photography, graphic arts, color and design, three dimensional design, commercial art and ceramics).

SCPA seeks to provide the highest quality academic and artistic instruction in an atmosphere of mutual support. Our students have achieved excellence in universities and conservatories across the nation, including UCLA, Juilliard, the Cleveland Institute of Music, the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, the Arts Center at Pasadena, Boston Conservatory, The University of the Arts at Philadelphia, and the Tisch School of the Arts. SCPA counts 5 Tony Award Winners amongst its alumni, along with countless others working professionally in the artistic arena.

We encourage the exchange of ideas and feelings to help students discover and enhance their own individuality and seek to provide the highest quality education in an atmosphere of mutual support.

To ensure that students who have a passion and aptitude for the arts are offered enrollment at the high school level, all incoming 9th grade students must first complete an Enrollment Options application and then participate in an audition process. The SCPA High School application must be received during the priority application period ending February 15 of the student’s eighth grade school year. All new tenth and eleventh grade students must also audition. SCPA offers a fall Open House for prospective students. Auditions take place in the spring at the SCPA campus.

SCPA Features:

  • Advanced placement (AP) classes in American History, English, Biology, Physics, Calculus, Spanish, Music Theory, Studio Art and Art History, as well as gifted cluster and seminar classes
  • A seven period day that allows students to be enrolled in 1-3 arts classes each semester
  • Computer technologies that support Journalism, Art and Theatre classes
  • Courses in physical education including martial arts and dance
  • Exhibitions and performances that require after school practice and rehearsal

Mission Statement
We, the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts (SCPA), are dedicated to providing a challenging interdisciplinary curriculum which inspires academic and artistic excellence for a culturally diverse population. We are committed to a personalized atmosphere of self-esteem, respect, enthusiasm and cooperation.

Vision Statement
The San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts is a college preparatory, artsfocused
public school that provides students in grades 6 through 12 with a rigorous
standard-based curriculum in art and academics that instills a life-long passion for learning and a respect for diversity.

SMART Goal
Students will maintain a minimum grade of B in their arts classes as a criteria to remain at SCPA by June 2010.
After school tutoring programs for academic courses will support student learning and achievement as well as after school rehearsals, workshops, and residencies with guest artists will begin in school year 2008-2009 through the 21st Century ASSETs grant. A 2009 summer arts institute will be launched through funding from the 21st Century
ASSETs grant.

Each year, students will become more familiar to arts-focused post-secondary programs through college fairs. Our counselors will become more familiar with colleges and conservatories and will invite college representatives from such schools to SCPA. We will increase the number of college acceptances into these schools by 20% by June 2009.
A required summer reading and writing assignment will continue. The writing
assignment is tailored to the student’s arts’ focus/interest. This is one measure to improve student literacy in reading and writing.SCPA will increase its enrollment from 1,420 students in 2008-09 to 1,500 in 2009-10 through a series of steps: a new website with detailed information about SCPA and its admission process; Magnet Monday tours for interested students/families; an Open House
held in December 2008 that attracted more than 200 families; Participation in two Magnet Fairs in January 2009; Local television coverage in December 2008 and again inJanuary 2009
