Spreckels Academy of Bilingual Studies Magnet provides students in Grades K-5 with an opportunity to gain exposure to the Spanish language. Students participate in an appropriate grade level Spanish language development program 30-45 minutes, four days a week, in a culturally integrated setting. Teachers have developed a sequence for Spanish instruction that outlines the Spanish language concepts and vocabulary to be taught at each grade level. Spreckels offers a challenging academic program in which all students are taught literacy, math, science, social studies, art, and music in English. Spanish speaking students are provided primary language support. The Spreckels PTA is very active and provides enriching activities for all students which includes funding for field trips, assemblies, 5th grade promotion activities and school supplies.

Mission Statement
The purpose of our magnet is to expose all students at Spreckels Magnet to the Spanish Language and cultures of the many Spanish speaking countries.

Vision Statement
After completion of six years of Spanish study, we want students to be able to participate in
conversations over familiar topics in Spanish.
As a staff, we want to continue to make Spanish a priority in the school day, even though the
minutes are so limited for all that must be accomplished. This includes continuing to refine our
curriculum and renewed commitments from the total staff to be a part of the magnet.
Our school must become and stay a group of educators committed to making Spanish as a
Second Language a priority.

SMART Goals: How will we mark our progress toward our vision?
Academic goal: To develop Spanish language skills in all students and expose them to the
cultural pieces of Spanish speaking countries around the world by following a sequential
curriculum.
• Academic goal: To make adequate yearly progress for all our English Learners by using daily
Focused English Language Development and having students appropriately grouped for
learning.
• Magnet program goal: To continue to work together as a staff to refine and implement a quality
Spanish as a Second Language Program for our students.
• Magnet enrollment goal: Historically, Spreckels has attracted many students to our magnet.
However, with the changes in the enrollment deadlines for 2009-10, there is a fear that
prospective parents may not know to submit the application by February 15, 2009, or may not
be prepared to make this decision by the deadline.
