Budget Crisis Eliminates Transportation for Magnet Schools The state budget crisis has brought about changes in the way SDUSD must operate. Cuts totaling more than $100 million, ranging from healthcare benefit reductions for employees to increasing class size -- but no projected teacher layoffs -- have been approved for next school year by San Diego Unified School District's Board of Trustees. This meets a required balanced budget while balancing the educational commitment to our children. Yesterday, the Board of Education made a preliminary decision to eliminate transportation for all magnet schools as part of proposed budget cuts for the 2009-2010 school year. This decision will of course affect our magnet schools next year. The final budget will be approved in June. Transportation will continue to be provided through the end of this school year. The district is currently looking at how eliminating bus transportation will impact magnet schools. This study will be presented to the superintendent by the end of the week. We want to assure all of our parents that we will be in close communication with you in the days ahead as more information becomes available. In the meantime, please continue checking this web site for updates. March 11, 2009 |
