Commemorating the Birth of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. - It took 15 years to create the federal holiday commemorating the birth of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Legislation for a commemorative holiday was first introduced days after the civil rights leader's assassination in 1968.

Commemorating 9/11 -
After 9/11, students and staff throughout SDUSD organized fundraisers for the American Red Cross and other relief organizations, created cards, letters and banners for firefighters and police in New York City.

Teddy Bear Drive 2005 - SDCS
Police Services wrapped up the 2005 San Diego County Law Enforcement
Teddy Bear Drive. The drive successfully collected over 65,000
stuffed animals that were all donated to children treated at Children's
Hospital.

150th Anniversary -
San Diego City Schools (SDCS) began celebrating its 150th Anniversary since its inauguration on July 1, 1854. The district has grown to more than 200 educational facilities with 14,500 full-time equivalent positions representing more than 15,800 employees.

Brown v. Board of Education - San Diego City Schools (SDCS) joined with the University of San Diego's School of Education and School of Law to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Brown v. Board of Education, the historic Supreme Court ruling that ended official segregation in public schools.
