On March 10, the Board of Education adopted a set of additional budget cuts, called Plan A , for the 2009/10 fiscal year. This action was necessary for the board to meet its legal requirements to file a financial statement, called the 2nd Interim Financial Report, with the County Office of Education which was due on March 17. This is a preliminary list of budget cuts that may be included in the final annual budget that will be adopted by the board in June. Of the $100 million in budget reductions adopted by the board, approximately $34 million are subject to collective bargaining. The board was also required to identify additional potential budget reductions, called Plan B , that would be considered should agreements not be reached on the Plan A reduction list. PPO Works Hand-in-Hand with Community Partners |

Several times a year, Physical Plant Operations (PPO) works with volunteer groups to support school site improvements including weed abatement, general cleanup, landscape improvement, litter pick-up and painting. District employees provide guidance to make sure that the services provided meet district standards. Through this collaboration, our schools gain valuable resources and build relationships with community partners. On March 11, Landscape Services worked with Cox Communications to provide rolling planter boxes at Baker Elementary and is currently working with the Rotary Club of Southeast San Diego to select a site for an improvement project in April. PPO will also be assisting Balboa Elementary with its $100,000 school makeover awarded by the National Educators Association. Volunteers Provide Safe Passage for Elementary Students |
|
The School Police Volunteer and Parent Patrols help ensure our students’ safe passage to and from 13 elementary schools. As extra pairs of eyes and ears, these active parents serve as safety monitors who assist school Safety Patrols at crosswalks and intersections before and after school. Launched in 2002, the program provides volunteers who remind drivers to obey traffic laws and assist both student and adult pedestrians with obeying posted signs and crosswalks. All patrol candidates are required to complete a district volunteer application and agree to background checks. The group recently gathered for a picnic at City Height Urban Village Park to celebrate the program. SDUSD Community Service Officers Ricardo Garcia and Eugene Lewis were in charge of the cooking. School Police Chief Don Braun commended volunteers for their exemplary effort and dedication. For more information, please contact Officer Garcia or Officer Lewis at (619) 725-7000. |
