Ninth Grade Intervention Initiatives Honored
GAME On!San Diego Unified has received the ‘Dr. Asa G. Hilliard III Model of Excellence Award’ for our new Ninth Grade Intervention Initiatives Adobe PDF – GAME On! and 10-to-Succeed. The award was presented at the College Board’s ‘A Dream Deferred Conference: The Future of African American Education 2009’ recently held in Los Angeles. Accepting the award on behalf of the district were Morse High School Principal Todd Irving and Security Assistant Winston Neely, and Becky Phillpott, Intervention Initiative leader. The trio also presented a session on our Ninth Grade Intervention Initiatives at the conference to a standing-room-only audience.

The Award recognizes individuals or organizations that have encouraged African American students to strive for academic success. Please join me in congratulating Becky Phillpott and all our ninth grade intervention teams for a job well done!

Did You Know?
Did you know that every 26 seconds a student drops out of school? That's 1.2 million students every year! The Association of Supervision and Curriculum has produced a short video clip that focuses on this crisis and points out the bleak future of high school dropouts. I would like to thank our graduation coaches, all who participated in Project Recovery during the first weeks of this school year, and our employees who have dedicated themselves to keeping our students in school and helping them meet graduation requirements. You are true 'Difference Makers' and exemplify the caring that exists at San Diego Unified. Click here to watch the video. Please call me at (619) 725-5506, should you have questions.

Kearny DMD Recognized for Exemplary Career Tech Education
State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O'Connell has announced that Kearny High School of Digital Media and Design (DMD) is one of six California high schools recognized for their exemplary Career Technical Education (CTE) programs. The special honor recognizes schools for meeting local and regional needs and providing a firm foundation of career preparation in which all students can participate. For more information, please contact Principal Cheryl Hibbeln at (858) 496-8370 or chibbeln@sandi.net .
Crime Stoppers Honors Outstanding District Officer
CrimeStoppers
On May 26, School Police Officer Carla Kuamoo was honored at the “Enough is Enough” Crime Stoppers luncheon for her tenacity and dedication to her students and the Campus Crime Stoppers Program. Officer Kuamoo, respectfully referred to as “Officer K”, is assigned to Monroe Clark Middle School where she has successfully used the Campus Crime Stoppers Program to encourage students to report crime by using the anonymous tip line. This past year, Officer K received nearly 50 Crime Stoppers tips that have led to numerous felony and misdemeanor arrests of gang members for weapons, fighting and drug possession on campus. With their participation, Monroe Clark students have demonstrated their desire to have a safer school. With Officer K’s leadership, she has made a difference on campus and in the community of City Heights. For more information, please contact School Police Chief Don Braun at (619) 725-7000.
