Board Appoints Bill Kowba as Superintendent |
On Tuesday, June 29, the Board approved the appointment of Bill Kowba as the new Superintendent for San Diego Unified. His appointment marked the culmination of a search process that provided the public with many opportunities to share their opinions with the Board about the most desirable skills and personal qualities needed in the next Superintendent. Over the last four months, five town hall meetings were attended by parents, students, employees and community members and suggestions were submitted through the district website. In addition, a board-appointed committee comprised of 15 volunteers helped facilitate the town hall meetings, reviewed all applications for the position and recommended a list of seven candidates for the Board to interview. On June 17, three board-identified finalists, including Kowba, made public presentations where additional community input was solicited. The Board was quick to identify Kowba as the sole finalist on June 22 and made the official appointment on June 27.
A reception was held to honor Superintendent Kowba on June 29. Joining the Board of Education and district employees at the celebration were former San Diego Unified Superintendent Tom Goodman and Kowba’s wife and daughter, shown in the photo. Congratulations Superintendent Kowba.

Emergency Temporary Parcel Tax Proposed |
Nearly $400 million in budget cuts have been imposed on San Diego Unified over the last three years. The district’s projected budget deficit in 2011-12 is $127 million. In response to this unprecedented budget crisis and in order to maintain educational programs and reasonable class sizes, it is critical that the district explore all available revenue sources. For that reason, the district is proposing an Emergency Temporary Parcel Tax measure on the November 8, 2010 ballot. A parcel tax is the only local funding option available to school districts to provide funds for operational purposes.
The Emergency Temporary Parcel Tax would be for a limit of five years and all funds generated would be used for specific educational purposes and programs outlined in the measure. As proposed, the measure would generate an estimated $58 million annually for the district. District charter schools would receive a proportionate share of the parcel tax. A public hearing on the parcel tax proposal will be held at the Board of Education meeting on July 13, no earlier than 5 p.m. For complete information, please visit www.sandi.net/parceltax .

Olympian’s Legacy Lives on at Joyner Elementary |

The family of the late Olympic athlete, Florence Griffith Joyner, joined district and city officials as well as community members in celebrating the official grand opening of the school that bears Joyner’s name and the new joint-use field adjacent to the school. A dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony was held for Florence Griffith Joyner Elementary School on Saturday, June 12, as part of a community “Celebrate Family Day.”
Joyner’s mother, Florence Griffith, and sister, Elizabeth Tate, a resident of City Heights, spoke on behalf of their family, and expressed great joy and gratitude that Joyner’s legacy is living on in the students, staff and community. Mayor Jerry Sanders and City Councilman Todd Gloria also participated in the event.
Joyner Elementary and the joint-use field were constructed with Prop. MM funds, the district’s 1998-2008 capital improvement bond measure. For more information, please contact Joyner Principal Gilbert Gutierrez, Jr. at (619) 640-4000 or ggutierrez1@sandi.net .

Central Elementary Students Learn in the Great Outdoors |
“Camping out” is something few Central Elementary School students have enjoyed, but Central’s third-graders recently had the opportunity to experience the great outdoors, thanks to a generous donation from the Jarrett Meeker Foundation. Students spent a day and night at Louis Stelzer County Park in Lakeside where they learned about the Kumeyaay Indians, native plants, animals and reptiles, and astronomy and hiking. All of the lessons were designed by teachers incorporating California state curriculum standards. Learn more in an article published in the San Diego Union-Tribune or contact Principal Cindy Marten at (619) 281-6644 or cmarten@sandi.net .
