Summer Programs/Opportunities for GATE Students

 

NTC Summer Arts Academy

"NTC Promenade presents an opportunity for students (grades 3-8) to work with professional artists in dance, music, visual arts, theater, martial arts and physical conditioning. Students choose from a menu of activities in half day or full day programs.

"NTC Promenade is the Arts and Culture district at Liberty Station (former Naval Training Center) in Point Loma. The district is developed and managed by the nonprofit NTC Foundation. Resident groups participating in the Summer Arts Academy include: San Diego Ballet, Visions Art Quilt Gallery, Jean Isaacs Dance Theatre, Recreational Music Center, PAARTS: Performing Arts and Restorative Training Specialists, Expressive Arts Institute, Malashock Dance School, ARTS: A Reason to Survive, Actors Alliance Musical Theatre Performance, Capoeira Brasil, and U.S. Karate Academy.

University of Oregon Summer Enrichment Program

"SEP (the Summer Enrichment Program) is a residential academic enrichment program for highly gifted and talented students who are currently in the 6-10th grades. SEP students take six classes from a choice of over 30 options that cover a wide range of subjects, typically including Literature, Math, Classical Studies, Law, the Visual and Performing Arts, and many more. Students are immersed in a university environment while at SEP, living in dorms, eating in campus dining halls, and learning in the university's academic and research facilities. Classes are held during weekday mornings and afternoons; late afternoons, evening, and weekends offer an ever-changing selection of social options for students to choose from, with students being encouraged to build their schedules around their interests, and to take advantage of what the camp and university has to offer.

The Summer Institute for Gifted

"One of our programs is geared towards gifted and accelerated students. Celebrating its 25th years, The Summer Institute for the Gifted offers residential and day programs throughout the U.S.

"Students in grade 4 - 11 have the opportunity to attend a SIG Residential program. These three-week long sessions offer over 50 different classes for participants to choose from. Students are able to select courses from a range of subjects including Humanities, Math, Science and Multi-Disciplinary. After attending five courses a day, the evenings are filled with recreational activities and social events.

"Here in California, we have two residential programs: University of California, Berkeley; University of California, Los Angeles. (Both UCLA and UCB have commuter options for students who live within driving distance of the campus. This option is great for families looking to save a little money.)"

GATEWAYS Summer School

"GATEWAYS Summer School offers fast-paced, intense enriching experiences for identified gifted and high-achieving children who are entering grades 1 through 12 in the fall. Course content does not include basic skills. Courses are designed for students who have mastered the basics and are interested in learning new concepts. Test results are not required for admission to GATEWAYS. However, in placing their children, parents are urged to note that all GATEWAYS classes are intended to challenge students who are typically achieving above grade level."

COSMOS/UCSD

"This exciting program is designed specifically for talented and motivated high school students. The California State Summer School for Mathematics and Science (COSMOS) is a 4-week residential summer program open to entering ninth through exiting twelfth-grade high school students with demonstrated interest and achievement in math and science.

"This intensive experience is intended to encourage the brightest and most promising young minds to continue their interest in these fields. Located on four University of California campuses (Davis, Irvine, San Diego and Santa Cruz), COSMOS provides students with an unparalleled opportunity to work side-by-side with outstanding university faculty and researchers, covering topics extending beyond the typical high school curriculum.

"COSMOS at UCSD will place a strong emphasis on technology and engineering, in addition to mathematics and science, and will be administered through the Jacobs School of Engineering."
