Labs & P.E.

Math and Science Labs

Students who attend Grant benefit from an additional 180 minutes of math/science enrichment per week in our math and science labs.

Physical Education

Grant Elementary students receive physical education once a week for 45 minutes with a certified physical education specialist. (The remainder of the state-mandated 100 minutes minimum per week is provided through the classroom teachers.) Mrs. Laurie Roeder has been teaching at Grant since 1997, and has been in the profession since 1976. She has received training in neurokinesiology and earned her master’s degree. She is an active member of the the California Association for Health, Physical Education and Recreation.

A wide-range of sports-specific skills is introduced, at the appropriate grade level: Basketball, soccer, volleyball, tennis, track and field, hockey, gymnastics, and others.

The SPARK Program

San Diego Unified Schools has adopted the SPARK (Sports, Play, and Active Recreation for Kids) curriculum for physical education. All our classroom teachers have been trained to use these activities. They will teach additional lessons in physical education during each week.

Fitness Testing

All fifth graders are required by the California State Office of Education to undergo testing in March and April. Curl-ups, push-ups, flexibility, height, weight, and running are recorded. Younger grades are encouraged to try to earn the Presidents’ Council on Physical Fitness awards and patches. Opportunities for self-evaluation are ongoing .

Special Events and Volunteer Opportunities

If you wish to help out in the physical education program or at any of our special events, please contact Mrs. Laurie Roeder. She is always on the lookout for energetic souls!

Some of the special events this year will include: Jump Rope for Heart, Jog-a-thon, Bicycle Rodeo, Girls in Sports Day, Punt-Pass-and Kick competition, to name a few.

Parents, Aunts, Uncles, and Grandparents are invited to become “Volunteer Coaches” to assist when we teach soccer, basketball, gymnastics, and other sports-skill units. Children will develop higher skills and be safer when more eyes and hands are available. Just let me know when you want to help!
