The "Partners in Education (PIE) Program" was established by the San Diego City Schools District in 1982. It is part of the Community Relations Department. It forms collaborative arrangements between schools and organizations including businesses, government agencies and military commands, as well as service, educational and cultural community organizations. Partnerships focus on human resources rather than the donation of funds. In 2004-2005, 31% of the partners district-wide provided direct support to students through tutoring and mentoring.Specific areas for schools and partners to direct the focus of their partnerships area:
- Tutor/Mentor Recruitment, Training, and Retention
- Educational Technology
- Curriculum Support
- School-to-Career
In additon, partnerships linked to state standards have been developed in the areas of:
- Literacy
- Mathematics
- Physical Education
- Science
- Social Studies
- Visual and Performing Arts
Schools can also use other partner resources such as supporting teacher/staff recognition, campus beautification, and providing speakers in the classroom.
Even with over 1,200 partners, each partnership is unique and individually planned by the school and partner. Green School is a participant in the distrtict's Parnership in Education program. Our partners, Casey's Place, National University, Herlinda Sandoval-Ryan of Realty Executives and the San Carlos Branch of the San Diego Public Library help us make the school community connection. They provide tutoring, literacy support, student recognition, athletic mentoring, career awareness and support for student activities.
