On Track With Green’s Physical Education Program Myron B. Green Academics & Athletics Magnet has been providing opportunities for all students to be healthy and ready to learn since 1975. Daily physical education taught by two specialists offers students a standards-based curriculum from gymnastics to swimming. Many studies have been done regarding the benefits of quality physical education and increased brain activity. Results show higher achievement on standardized tests. Following is yet another study and related link on the Internet that validates our efforts: An interesting experiment, regarding physical education and reading, is taking place in an Illinois High School. To improve the brain, Naperville Central High School teachers are working the student body. Freshman who are not achieving in reading are taking a physical education class immediately before reading instruction. Early results show that a majority of those students increased their reading scores on standardized tests. This year the high school has increased the number of students in the program adding to the partnership between academics and physical fitness. The research shows that “Exercise is like Miracle-Gro to the brain,” says Dr. John Ratey a Harvard psychiatrist. Ratey says research has revealed that exercise allows brain cells to bind together faster, making students ready to learn. See an article about this experiment published in the Chicago Tribune.
