SCHOOL
DRESS
Children
are encouraged to wear clothing that is clean, neat and appropriate for
the age. Baggie pants, halter-tops, tank tops, T-shirts with alcohol,
cigarette, marijuana logos or obscene wording are not to be worn.
Lipstick, eye shadow, nail polish or other age inappropriate make up is
not acceptable. Flip flops, high heels, sandals, and any other dangerous
footwear will not be permitted. The State requires physical education
activities. Tennis shoes or closed-toed rubber-soled shoes are the
safest shoes to wear on the dirt and asphalt playground for these daily
activities.
ABSENCES
School
attendance is very important for every child. Children will miss
valuable instruction if they are not in school and they may not pass to
the next grade if absences are excessive. Please limit absences to
illnesses or serious family emergency. We strongly encourage you to
schedule your vacations and medical and dental appointments during
school vacations or after school hours. Please carefully review the
District’s calendar included in this packet and schedule your vacations
and doctors appointments accordingly.
REPORTING
TARDIES, ABSENCES AND ILLNESSES
We are
required by law to keep a record of both tardies and absences, and their
reasons. Parents are required by law to report a tardy or an
absence within 24 hours. Call the school at 619-583-5704 to report a child’s absence on
the first day of absence by 10:00 a.m and each
consecutive day thereafter. A message may be left if the office
is closed stating the child’s name, room number, date of absence and
reason for absence.
It is the
parent’s responsibility to get their child to school on time. Children
who are late miss instruction and disrupt the classroom. Would you want
your child’s instruction interrupted while the teacher records the late
child’s entry and catches them up on missed instruction? Children may be
required to make up missed work during part of recess if they are tardy.
Tardies and
absences at Hearst continue to be a major concern. When a child is
tardy it affects his/her learning as well as that of the other students.
We also hope you will realize the seriousness of being absent from
school and work to keep your child in school every day. Thank you for
your cooperation.
VISITORS
Visitors
are welcome at school. To insure the safety of students and staff,
all visitors must check in at the school office. Please understand
that teachers are not free to conference with you during school hours.
Parents interested in visiting classrooms shall contact the teacher to
schedule a mutually acceptable time for visitation. Visitation by
non-enrolled children is not permitted.
The school
office is open from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. daily. Please leave a message on the answering machine outside of
these hours. Please speak slowly and clearly.
VOLUNTEERS
ARE NEEDED
Parent involvement is essential to a child’s education. There are many
ways to be involved. Volunteerism is promoted and appreciated at Hearst.
TB clearance and a District Volunteer Application must be on file in the
school office. Ask in the office for details. Volunteering
comes in many forms. All adults are warmly welcomed to make friends and
work to improve our school. There are papers to grade, materials to
make, tutoring, art support and more. Call the school (619-583-5704),
contact your child’s teachers, read the monthly Hearst Happenings, join
the PTA. School Governance Meetings and the wonderful group of mothers,
fathers, grandparents, and community members that volunteer at our
school.
