Project Detail

Disaster Recovery & Business Continuance

The Information Technology Department is currently implementing a Disaster Recovery & Business Continuance site. The DR/BC center will be located at the district's Transportation Center. We are awaiting a new date from PPO for completion.

Objectives:

After meeting with the districts Chief Financial Officer the following objectives have been defined in the event of a disaster we will be able to:

" Enter Time and Labor
" Generate payroll from the PeopleSoft HR and Financial systems
" Print a Payroll and distribute checks to employees
" Take Attendance if schools are in session from the Student Information System (Zangle)
" Provide up-to-date information on student attendance from the Student Information System (Zangle)
" Maintain our electronic mail system (Exchange/Outlook/OWA) communications where functionally possible (Exchange/OWA)

Opt-E-Man - Secondary schools upgrade (41 schools)

The IT department has currently upgraded the Wide Area Network (WAN) at all of the high schools and middle schools. Schools are upgraded to a fiber connection called 'Optiman' with a bandwidth of 50Mb. Optiman technology will allow the district to increase bandwidth at these school sites as demand for bandwidth grows without having to do any further construction.

At most schools, we were able to install the 'Optiman' fiber without having to trench. Schools that will be affected by trenching, will be notified in advance and a plan will be coordinated to minimize the impact to the school.

We notify schools of their 'turn-up' date once we have completed and certified a light test.

"To say that the WAN upgrade as SDHS is "noticeable" would be a serious understatement. The minute they plugged us in, our DWA apps began to behave in peculiar ways. No time for small talk during schedule prints or coffee breaks between student lookups. More than any personal reflection (which would be admittedly nerd-centric), I think the most poignant evidence of the upgrade is the conspicuous absence of faculty/staff complaints regarding Zangle-related sluggishness. It's clear to me now that the staff of San Diego High had been associating symptoms of network-related logjams with Zangle, and not physical bandwidth. After the expansion of WAN bandwidth, it's ironic that the most common staff response is that "Zangle is fixed". Joe Austin - Principal - San Diego High

We are now working on converting all of the elementary schools to OptiMan by June of 09. As we work toward a schedule of activities we will post it on the IT site.

Zangle Academic History

Academic History still exists in our legacy system. This project will convert that data to our new SIS system of record Zangle. Once completed all report cards and transcripts will be available from Zangle. Another benefit will be that Academic History data will be available to Cognos (our data warehouse and reporting system).

Legacy Hardware Replacement

IT currently has a few legacy applications that are necessary to support. The current legacy applications are running on hardware that has reached end-of-life. We will be implementing VM Ware on new hardware to support these legacy applications.

Future Data Base Platform

We are studying the impact and effects of moving off of our current data base platform. The study will address: performance; cost; on-going maintenance; OS overhead; skill sets needed; schema changes; etc.
