Mark Twain High School Overview Mark Twain Junior/Senior High School is a special counseling-oriented school in which all personal, social, academic and career needs of students are addressed by staff members within a warm, friendly and helpful atmosphere. All the courses required to receive a high school diploma are offered at Twain. Each course stresses the relevance of class work to the immediate and future needs of the students enrolled, including future career goals. Students are encouraged to participate in work experience programs and district occupational classes in order to prepare for a smooth and successful transition from school to work. Programs & Services A number of strategic programs are in place to help students reach their maximum potential: GED Preparation Class This program prepares students to pass the general education development (GED) examination. It uses individualized education programs to address specific weaknesses and concentrates on five areas of study: English grammar and usage, reading, science, social students and mathematics. Pregnant Minor Program (PMP) The PMP program is designed to help prevent low birthweight babies, while providing a comprehensive program design to meet the academic needs of pregnant students. It is a state-funded alternative educational opportunity for any pregnant student in the district. The program is also offered at Garfield High School. Social Concerns Support and mentoring is available for students who have a concern for their social and emotional development. School-Aged Parent and Infant Development (SAPID) SAPID enables teen parents, both male and female, to complete their high school educations, to develop parenting skills and to explore vocational interests and job skills. Scholastic Opportunities using Alternative Resources (SOAR) Independent Study The SOAR Independent Study program provides an alternative learning environment to students with a wide range of academic abilities and learning styles. The program creates a bridge between school and community by encouraging parents to take a more active role in their child's education. Students will become more active participants in the learning process by studying at their own pace and place within the confines of a daily time commitment.
