Red Ribbon Week (Safety)
Date: TBD
Red Ribbon Week is a nationally supported campaign to provide drug awareness and encourage good choices. At Loma Portal we've decided, since being a unique K-4 school, we would focus on good choices centered on safety. Since most of our population is too young to be exposed to substance abuse issues, we see promoting 'good choices' or 'healthy choices' as a foundation to bigger issues down the road. In past years we have focused on nutrition, exercise and police/fire safety. Last year we had a school wide assembly that featured hands on tours of many types of emergency vehicles, including the landing of the fire safety helicopter on our playground. It was an exciting event! Contact our PTA with ideas or volunteering opportunities in this area.
Monster Bash (a PTA Family Night event)
Date: TBD
Our annual Halloween party is a fun and safe way for our community to celebrate this holiday. Classroom sponsored booths, costume contests, cake walks, games, and our new highlight…a super fun, age appropriate, haunted house sponsored by our Dad's Club!! This is not a fundraiser, the money from this event supports all the family nights. Come enjoy the fun!
Parent - Teacher Conferences
Date: TBD
Effective parent-teacher conferences involve information sharing between parents and teachers, goal-setting for the future, and progress evaluation. Parent-teacher conferences must be meaningful and two-way between home and school. Asking the teacher the right questions can lead to a more productive conference and greater student success. Below are some suggested questions.
1. What are your expectations of my child (in all academic subject areas)? What is my child learning?
2. How do you know that she or he is learning?
3. In what areas does my child need to improve? How can I help my child improve?
4. How are you helping my child improve?
5. What are the homework requirements?
6. How are my child's learning skills and test-taking skills?
7. What are my child's academic and social strengths and weaknesses?
8. Are there any behavior problems that I should know about?
9. How are discipline and positive reinforcement handled in your classroom?
10. May I see my child's work?
It's also important to let the teacher know how your child is at home. Let the teacher know how your child reacts to praise, reinforcement, and disciple. (questions from PTA.org)
