Cultural arts
New this year at Loma Portal Elementary is a music program funded by the PTA, for all children, kindergarten through 3 RD grades. Students will learn how to identify and describe basic elements in music, sing age-appropriate songs from memory, play singing games from various cultures, describe music according to its elements using the terminology
of music, and other fun and educational things. For more information, see this month's article about the new music program in the Dolphin News. At the 4 TH grade the music program is taught through our Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) Department.
Throughout the year the Loma Portal PTA also sponsors Author visits.
Recognition assembles
Outstanding scholastic achievement or citizenship is recognized in school assemblies.
Teacher appreciation
In May, a week of appreciation is dedicated to all of our wonderful teachers who have given so much of themselves to our children throughout the year. PTA Parent Room Representatives coordinate daily special ways of thanking the teachers. On one day of that week, the PTA sponsors a luncheon for the teachers in the auditorium.
Red Ribbon Week
The Red Ribbon Celebration was started in California to honor the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agent Enrique Camarena. Every year the children of Loma Portal Elementary use this celebration to pledge a drug-free lifestyle. Parents and teachers use the event as a way to communicate to children about the problems of drug abuse.
Yearbook
The Loma Portal PTA designs, publishes, and sells a student yearbook featuring the activities and students at Loma Portal Elementary. The Yearbook Committee collects photos taken by parents at student activities or in classrooms throughout the school year for possible inclusion in the book. Orders are typically taken in the office in the early spring for delivery near the end of the school year.
Klassic Kids©
Klassic Kids© offers licensed childcare on site at Loma Portal Elementary.
The program runs before and after school and is available to families part-time, full-time,
or on Thursdays only. Activities include homework help, crafts, indoor/outdoor games,
field trips and much more. Financial aid is available to those who qualify.
