Nominations were based on student achievement, professional development and community involvement, teaching philosophy and style, knowledge of trends and issues in education, accountability and ability to represent the field of education. He had previously been nominated and selected as the San Diego Unified School District 2006-07 Teacher of the Year at the Middle Level. Eduardo has been teaching for seven years. His teaching philosophy is based on how he wanted his teachers to teach him: with energy, passion and a sincere appreciation of the power they possessed to help students succeed. He incorporates activities, explorations, and projects in his teaching to provide multiple entry points for the diverse needs of his students. He uses technology and multimedia to bring out fresh thinking about age-old ideas. He encourages his students to voice their opinions and engage each other in meaningful discussions as he presses them to relate our nation’s history to events that unfold in the world each day. “I'm just totally surprised and honored to represent the great teachers in San Diego. I want to give a big thank you to all the great teachers and staff at Marston. There's no way I could have done any of this without their help and support. What I've done is a result of being surrounded by great friends, family, teachers and especially students. Everyone helps me be the teacher that I've become. Their energy, support, motivation and smiles give me the energy to continue the work that I do. I'm the lucky one who gets to spend time on a daily basis with this country's future. Teaching is a privilege that humbles me,” Eduardo said after receiving this honor. Marston Principal Elizabeth Cook said, “Eduardo Ochoa is the history teacher you always wished your son or daughter had. He instills a love of learning through understanding how the personal life of an individual connects to the lives of the people in the past that shaped our nation. He brings history alive by drawing parallels between contemporary issues and those of the past. He reminds students that who they are and how they are today makes an indelible mark on their own ‘personal histories’.” His next step is to represent the county in the contest for the state's best teacher. >> News Releases |
