EDUCATIONAL ACHIEVEMENT

Over the past years, PBE has redoubled its focus on academic achievement.  Thanks to the efforts of our fantastic staff, the support of our PBE families and community, and especially much hard work and tremendous effort by our students, we are making strong and evident progress.

The Academic Performance Indicator (API) is the baseline score by which all schools are measured.

In the 2009 API tests, Pacific Beach Elementary's Base API score was 877.  The average API for other schools in California with similar student populations was 826.

PBE achieved its improvement goals for every subgroup of students.  Scores improved by 22 to 29 points for every subgroup, from 2008 to 2009.

75% of PBE's second graders scored at proficient or advanced levels in English (Language Arts), and 89% in Mathematics.  2009 subject test results are available here.  For the full details of the API Test Scores for PBE, CLICK HERE

COMPARING API SCORES BETWEEN SCHOOLS

When comparing API scores between schools, it is important to look beyond the summary score.  Compare scores for the demographic groups within each school.  While academic achievement is paramount in an educational institution, diversity is an important aspect of any child's social development, especially in California.  At PBE, we are achieving our success across ethnic and socio-economic boundaries; keeping pace with, and even outperforming in some cases, schools that have much less diversity in their student population.  The following table has data from 2006.  2009 data for PBE are 950 for white students and 808 for Hispanic students.

MUSIC PROGRAM

Pacific Beach Elementary has a wonderful vocal music program led by an Orff trained music specialist.  Children receive specialized vocal, percussion, keyboard, recorder and music theory instruction one hour a week.  They also explore movement and dance in a large, bright, music room.  The children present two wonderful school musical performances a year.

For those who love singing and who are interested in further exploration of their musical talent, Pacific Beach Elementary offers an after-school choir program for 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders.  The choir meets from 12:15 to 1:30 p.m. on Wednesdays after school.  The choir has many opportunities to perform, both at the school and off campus, to showcase its talent and love of music.

Pacific Beach Elementary also offers instrumental music for the upper grades.  4th and 5th graders can choose to be in one of  two music groups, band or string ensemble.  These grouos meet on Thursdays and Fridays for one hour and have a year-end performance highlighting their work over the course of the year.
