Pershing's Head Counselor

Dear Pershing Families,

Our goal is to work closely with our parents and staff to ensure all students have the tools necessary to become successful in high school and beyond.  To help us reach this goal, the Counseling Department has undergone some changes for this school year.

Ms. Naomi Paige is our counselor for all 6th graders and I am the counselor for our 7th graders.  For 8th grade, I counsel students with last names beginning with A-L while Mrs. Paige counsels students with last names beginning with M-Z.

Whenever a student wants to speak with either Ms. Paige or me, he/she can pick up a “Request to See the Counselor” form next to the basket in the attendance office.  After it is filled out, the student should place the form in the basket.  Ms. Paige or I will then send for the student so we can devote uninterrupted time to address the student’s concern.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us via e-mail or at (619) 465-3234.

Elective Courses

Each spring, our counselors meet with 6th and 7th grade students in their elective classes to discuss the various elective courses that will be offered in the upcoming school year. During this meeting, students will receive their elective scheduling cards.  These cards need to be completed and returned as soon as possible to the student’s current elective or wheel teacher. If you have any questions, please contact the Counseling Department at (619) 465-3234.

5th Grade Students

Every year, Pershing counselors visit with 5th graders at our various elementary feeder schools. Our counselors share a wide range of information with these students including details about our physical education curriculum, Wheel courses, and band. If you have any questions, contact Ms. Weintraub, Pershing's Head Counselor, by email or call her at (619) 465-3234.

Student Meeting

During the second semester, Patrick Henry Counselors meet with our 8th grade students to talk with them about their high school classes. At this assembly, students receive the Henry course catalog, Inquire, and a scheduling card for the upcoming school year. The Pershing Counseling Department then conducts follow up meetings with all 8th graders during their English classes. Our counselors will answer questions and review how to complete the scheduling cards.

Counseling Corner's
Monthly Updates from
Ms. Weintraub and Mrs. Paige

November, 2009

Dear Pershing Families,

It is hard to believe that November is here!

We are very happy to have an additional counselor at Pershing on Wednesdays and Thursdays this year. Her name is Ardellia Southern and she is our AB1802 counselor. She will be working with some of our 7th and 8th grade families developing academic support plans.

In November, students will be given a copy of their CST results from April, 2009. A lesson will be presented in their advisory class that centers on students’ understanding what their individual CST results actually mean and the correlation between their CST scores and their Q1 grades. In the process, each student will compose two personal academic goals he/she would like to reach this year, include steps to reach his/her goals, name people who will help him/her along the way and identify obstacles that may interfere with reaching these goals.

The purpose of presenting this lesson is to empower our students to take an active part in their education. Understanding how important it is to put forth their best effort and to set reachable goals will help build self-confidence and personal success.

In conjunction with this presentation, Mrs. Paige and I have been meeting with students who need some extra guidance completing assignments, projects, homework or simply need clarification on proper behavior on campus and/or in the classroom setting. Together we are addressing these concerns and developing plans so our students can reach their personal goals.

We are also very happy to be having “College: Making It Happen” once again at Pershing. This event is planned for April 7th from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Don’t forget to mark your calendars.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us.

October, 2009

Dear Pershing Families,

We are off to a great start.  Students are now settling into their classes and becoming involved in a variety of activities on campus.

If your child would like to see a counselor, please remind him/her to get a “Request to see Counselor” form from the attendance office.  There is a basket there for students to put in their requests and then Ms. Paige and I will send for them.

Please remind your children that being on time to school each morning is extremely important so they do not miss any instruction.  The first bell rings at 7:25 a.m. so they need to be at Pershing no later than 7:20 a.m.
