PTA-sponsored events: Math Night, Fall Carnival & Pig Race (above)

Sandburg PTA sponsors several events throughout the year, including many fun and educationally enriching programs for Sandburg students.

Programs sponsored by the Sandburg PTA for 2008-2009 school year include the following:

  • Kindergarten Orientation and School Tours for Families New to Sandburg  Kindergarten Orientation is an opportunity for parents of kindergarteners to meet the teachers, principal, PTA members, and other school staff.  Topics discussed at the orientation include expectations, guidelines, school procedures, programs and ideas that will make your child’s introduction to public education a positive experience. Families new to Sandburg (1st-5th Grade) will have an opportunity to learn about Sandburg Elementary School.
  • Back to School Night  This event gives you a glimpse of your child's daily life at school and an opportunity to learn about the curriculum. You'll be able to meet your child's teachers, the principal, other staff members and your fellow parents. You can also sign up to join the PTA or Dads Club. Research shows that parent involvement in schools helps students achieve more and schools thrive.
  • Math Night  view photos
  • Slam JAM Assembly  Slam JAM is an exciting new production provided by the Lamb's Players Theatre   that uses the same contagious blend of rhythm and percussion like their program BASH.  To add to the fun, Slam JAM uses poetry - some old some new -to explore the humor, discovery and challenge of everyday elementary school life.  Some of the poetry in slam JAM has been written by San Diego County students especially for this show. This assembly models good choices and respectful behavior.
  • Red Ribbon Week  is a National PTA program sponsored by individual PTA units to promote and reinforce the message "Say No to Drugs."
  • Fall Carnival - view photos
  • Awards Assemblies Reception  Teachers select students who have exhibited exemplary or improved effort in the areas of citizenship and academics. These students are honored in an assembly of their peers, teachers, parents, and family members. Sandburg PTA sponsors a cookie reception in the staff lounge immediately following the assembly
  • Holiday Gift Shop This Sandburg PTA-sponsored service gives our students the opportunity to do some Holiday shopping for their loved ones on their own, with affordable gift choices. Volunteers are needed to help children make gift selections.
  • Literature Comes to Life Assembly
  • PTA Pig Races  - view photos
  • Reflections Assemblies  The Reflections Program gives students a chance to express their creativity through writing, poetry, music, photography or visual art. Some students will have their work chosen to be entered in the district competition, with the chance to go on to state or national competition.
  • Sky Dome Assembly  A portable, inflatable planetarium will be on campus to dazzle our students as they are taken on a tour of the solar system.
  • Scholastic Book Fair  is a special reading event that is held at Sandburg where kids and families get to shop for their very own books! It's like a mini-bookstore, only much better! And every book has been hand-selected, reviewed and approved by reading specialists. Featuring a terrific assortment of books hand-selected by book experts, a Book Fair helps build school, classroom, and home libraries. Plus, a Book Fair is a great way to support and encourage reading and raise funds for our school.
  • Reading Night
  • Drummer Assembly Sandburg PTA provides student assemblies that include music, literature, dance, history, motivational subjects and more.
  • Jog-A-Thon
  • Spelling Bee
  • Staff Appreciation Week
  • Spring Open House
  • Career Day
  • Volunteer Tea
  • Family Bingo Night  Bingo Night is a free, fun, family-oriented event held yearly in the spring. The evening features many rounds of playing Bingo and winning fabulous prizes while eating delicious refreshments.
  • 5th Grade Promotion
  • Field Trips Transportation: Students will have the opportunity to go on field trips that are carefully selected by the teachers and coincide with units studied in that grade level. Sandburg PTA sponsors the transportation to these field trips. If you are interested in volunteering to be a chaperone on field trips, you will have the opportunity to do so with your child’s teacher.
  • Assist in ensuring School Picture Days run smoothly.
