  Honor Roll

Sandburg was selected by the California Business for Education Excellence Association for their 2009 Honor Roll in recognition for our work in improving test scores and closing the achievement gap.  We were one of approximately 20 San Diego Unified elementary schools that were recognized.  Please drop by the office to see the banner we were given which will ultimately hang in a prominent place around school.

  Academic Performance Index (API)

The Academic Performance Index (API) helps measure the academic performance and growth of schools. It is a numeric index (or scale) that ranges from a low of 200 to a high of 1000. A school's score or placement on the API is an indicator of a school's performance level.

Good News!  Sandburg received a new API score of 908.  Please click this link  for more details. Sandburg rocks!

  Traffic Circle

Gentle Reminders: The parking lot will be open in the mornings only for dropping off your children. Drop off time is 7:15 am to 7:45 am, Monday to Friday.  When you enter the parking lot, please:

  • Stay close to the right curb for drop off

  • Pull as far forward as possible

  • Slow down - speed limit is 5mph

  • Right turn only when exiting the parking lot to keep the flow of traffic (no left turn).

The goal is to create a valet service where drivers drive up with children and backpacks ready to go for a quick exit from the car. We will have adults and students out to monitor and assist in keeping the flow of traffic going. Please join the team by making this attempt at addressing our traffic issues and the safety of your children a success. Please refer to the Traffic Circle Map as your guide. Thank you to the volunteers who have agreed to be on the patrol.  Your time and willingness to help is greatly appreciated! If we all use our Tiger life skills and team spirit this new system can work – it does at other schools.

More Traffic Circle parent volunteers are needed.  If interested please send an email to sandelm@sandi.net

  Registration

Registration for Fall is ongoing.  Registration packets are available in the school office between the hours of 8:00am and 3:00pm.  Please click on the registration navigation on the left of this page for requirements information.

  Running and Walking Club

In an effort to promote our "Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds" quest, except for rainy days, all students who arrive on campus prior to 7:35 am must report immediately to Running/Walking Club.   Please go to the field and obtain your card out of your classroom box so you can get credit for your exercise.  When the 7:35 am bell rings the parents volunteering at the club will let you know that the last lap is approaching.  All students must be in their classes at 7:45 am sharp.  Healthy bodies does promote thinking and problem-solving skills.  Let's work together to ensure that happens in our community.

  Getting Involved

Parents and community members are encouraged to help support education by volunteering at Sandburg.  Some volunteer opportunities include Tutoring, Classroom Read Alouds, Classroom Assistance, Non-Classroom Assistance (media center, field trips, etc.), Parent-Supported Organizations (PTA, Foundation, Dad's Club, SSC, SGT, etc.), Parent Patrol, Running Club, etc.  Anyone interested in volunteering have to comply with appropriate volunteer screening requirements. A new volunteer must fill out a school volunteer application, provide a Tuberculin skin test result, and read and acknowledge understanding of the Volunteer Code of Conduct.  For more information, please contact Debbie Raynor at 858.566.0510 x1107.

Student Presentation at the Board Meeting

Some of Sandburg 5th grade students and the marines from MCAS Miramar MALS-11 were invited to do a short presentation of our Friday morning physical training (PT) program at the San Diego Unified board meeting on Tuesday, February 23, 2010. USMC MALS-11 in MCAS Miramar is Sandburg's Partner in Education for 14 years. Please visit the district website and watch the video of the 12-minute presentation from 04:00 to 16:00.  Oorah!

  Attendance

Attendance Matters!
"Students who arrive to school late, taken out of school early, and/or go out on contracts for extended time miss valuable instructional time. In order for Sandburg to stay a proficient school the children must be in school all day, every day. Help us help your child unconditionally by putting school as a priority every moment!"

Higher attendance equal higher achievement.  Please read Attendance - Your Job.

It is now "Digital Boards" (Chalkboard = old news;  Whiteboard = passé)

High-tech equipment that include student laptops and Promethean boards have been installed in all third grade classrooms.  Third grade teachers are also being trained to figure out how to work with these new classroom devices.  Read Chalk one up to technology from SD Union-Tribune and read Reinventing Education from SDUSD.

  Parking and Student Safety

The safety of every child is the most important concern of the Sandburg Staff. Returning parents to Sandburg are well aware of the parking issues, especially in the morning. Many of our parents are accustomed to parking their cars and then walking their student/s to class and waiting with them on campus until the start of school. This eliminates many parking spaces for the parents who must drop their student/s off on their way to work and creates major safety hazards at our crosswalk in the front of school and at the back gate. It also provides opportunities for those who might put our students in harm's way.

Except for Sandburg staff, there is no on-campus parking at Sandburg Elementary. Please park on the streets surrounding the campus and walk to meet your children.

  Rainy Days

If it is raining during school hours we will not lock the school parking lot.  Please be safe when dropping off and picking up your children.  Also, we will not be opening the back gate on rainy days due to the unsafe conditions of the back ramp area and water on the field.

 School Supply Lists
Because of our current budget crisis, Sandburg is asking parents/guardians to voluntarily supply (donate) their child with the list of learning tools below. This is only on a volunteer basis, so if you are unable to donate these supplies, please notify your child’s teacher the first week of school. This will allow the teacher to have the time to get the needed supplies for your child. Any items that are not used by the classroom teacher will be placed in our supply room for other teachers to use. We thank you for your continuous support.
