February is the month of sharing
the concept of LOVE as well as honoring the past Presidents
who have made a difference in our country. Take time to
celebrate the love of your children, family and friends –
life is too short not to!
A sad state
of affairs . . . our economy is in its deepest recession and
the schools, whether public, charter or private, are not
exempt. At this time San Diego Unified has frozen all site
budgets in anticipation of funding cuts from the state. The
staff and I are committed to providing the same level of
service to you and your children. We are collaborating on
identifying needs (not wants) we have from today until the
end of the school year. Changes in policies and procedures
are happening every day. We appreciate your support and
contributions through the various fundraising efforts at the
school. Thank you to our PTA, Foundation, ASB, 5th
Grade Promotion Committee, company matching programs, local
businesses and individuals for your time and effort in
making a difference here at Sandburg. Together we will get
through this challenging time.
Attendance
Matters! Thank you to all the families who make sure your
children are at school every day. As I have mentioned in my
past articles – “every day missed is another day behind in
achieving or achieving beyond the grade level standards”.
If your child is sick please keep him/her at home . . . that
really is the only valid excuse for a full day absence. Our
goal is to get at least one day this year where we have 100%
attendance . . . do you think we can do it?
Thank you
to PTA and the site discretionary fund (generously funded by
donations and contributions from the community) for
supporting the fifth grade visit to Junior
Achievement’s BizTown. We had an amazing
dendrite growing experience thanks to the BizTown and
Sandburg staff as well as our 35 parent and “friends of
Sandburg” volunteers. Sandburg had the most volunteers
of any school that has attended BizTown. The student’s
“pawsitive” attributes and community involvement definitely
made a statement that reflected a strong Sandburg pride. We
truly are the best in the west and we, despite budgetary
challenges, continue to only get better! BizTown will
become a yearly tradition for the fifth graders . . . what a
fabulous tradition indeed! Please check out the pictures on
our website.
Have you
stopped by to see the continuing changes occurring in our
new library and computer lab? Computer stations in the lab
are increasing thanks to all your contributions to the
Sandburg Foundation. There are beautiful new teaching rugs
in the library area and a refreshing literacy environment
being created by Debbie Molina, our new Literacy
Consultant. Thank you to Kelly McLaurin and Bill
Quackenbush for volunteering many hours in getting the lab
up and running!
Have a
special Valentine’s Day – from my heart to yours!
From my Heart with Sandburg
Tiger Pride!
