Due to the recent extreme heat wave and concern for the well-being of staff and students, the Superintendent has consulted with the Board leadership about revisions to the district air conditioning policy. Effective immediately, centrally controlled air conditioning systems will automatically be turned on when classroom temperatures reach 78° Fahrenheit. District policies and procedures are in the process of being revised to reflect this recent change. Open Enrollment Meetings Provide Info + Free Flu Shots
The annual Benefits Open Enrollment period will be held October 13 - November 21, 2008. During this period, eligible employees may enroll for medical/dental coverage, change plans, and/or add eligible dependents. All Open Enrollment changes will become effective January 1, 2009. Open Enrollment packets will soon be distributed to eligible employees. Several Open Enrollment Meetings have been scheduled throughout the month of October where employees can meet with representatives from the district medical and dental providers. Free and Reduced-Price Lunch Applications due October 29
Free and Reduced-Price Lunch applications must be received by Food Services (Revere Center) on or before Wednesday, October 29, to be considered for the official student counts that are used to determine the 2009-10 Title I funding per site. Applications will continue to be accepted by Food Services after October 31 to determine a student’s eligibility for the free and reduced lunch program but will NOT be considered for this important survey. Please review your "School Enrollment Report" information sent via e-mail from Food Services for a listing of students who have not returned applications for the Free and Reduced-Price Meal program. School Site Council Trainings
The Program Monitoring Department is continuing its School Site Council (SSC) trainings on October 20, 28, 30, and November 5, 13 and 17. The training will provide information about implementing Title I mandates, SSC responsibilities and bylaws, the revised Single Plan for Student Achievement (SPSA) template, understanding budgets, and categorical budget guidelines. Engaging Students in Service: An Introduction to Service-Learning
Volunteer San Diego is offering An Introduction to Service-Learning training on Wednesday, October 22, from 4 -7 p.m., at Volunteer San Diego located at 4699 Murphy Canyon Road. The training includes information on the basics of service learning and how it’s different from community service. Participants will learn how to integrate service-learning into classroom curriculum and will be provided resources and support for service projects. Administrators, teachers and staff working with youth are welcome to attend. There is a $30 registration fee to attend the training; registration fee waivers are available on a first-come, first-served, basis through the Community Relations Department. Journey to Academic Success
The Ballard Parent Center begins its series of free parent classes, Journey to Academic Success, on Thursday, October 23, from 5:30-7:30 p.m., at the Tubman-Chavez Multicultural Center, 415 N. Workshop for Private Schools Serving Students with Disabilities
The district Special Education Services Division is holding a workshop for private school teachers that serve children with disabilities and receive consultation services from the Parentally Placed Private School Services office. Food for Thought - Ingredients for Language will be presented by Elissa Barber, speech-language pathologist. The workshop will provide
strategies and interventions for the development of oral language skills and will focus on the use of academic language that aligns with state grade level standards. The workshop will be held Wednesday, October 22, from 3:30-5 p.m., in Building G at the Instructional Media Center. Parents are welcome to attend. Fall Quarter Parent Classes
San Diego Parent University begins its first quarter Parent Classes ( English | Spanish) on Tuesday October 14. The classes offer helpful information on parenting issues along with effective tools and techniques to help children achieve academically. Buick Invitational Tickets on Sale to Support Our Sports
Tickets are now on sale for the 2009 Buick Invitational PGA Golf Tournament as a fundraiser for our district physical education, athletic and extra curriculum programs. Tickets are $15/each and can be used for a one-day entry into the tournament any day during the weeklong event, February 3-8, 2009. Earn National Board Certification, Master's Degree at the Same Time
In partnership with National University, district teachers can pursue National Board Certification in 2009-10 while completing a Master's Degree in Teaching, a Master's with an Administrative Credential, or simply National Board Certification. Approximately 80 district teachers are currently participating in this partnership program. Classes meet one night per week at a district school and online in our hybrid program. Walden University ‘Educator for a Day’ Grants Walden University will honor schools and educators across the nation with its campaign in support of the National Education Association (NEA) Educator for a Day program. Free Exhibit Promotes Solar Education The City Tour for Solar will be on display in San Diego on October 12-19. The free public solar educational exhibit is touring 50 cities to educate municipal leaders, community members, public schools, universities and utilities on how to make solar energy a meaningful power resource for their cities. The Kids Zone includes interactive touch screens, solar-powered water fountains and solar-baked cookies. Teacher Guides are available for grades 6-8
