Black History is celebrated during the month of February. Information and teaching resources related to black history are available on the district Black History Month website.

Schools, Offices Closed February 9 and 16

All schools and central offices will be closed Monday, February 9, in observance of Abraham Lincoln’s birthday, and Monday, February 16, in observance of George Washington’s birthday.

February Post and Bid for 2009-10 School Year

A list of expected certificated staffing vacancies for the 2009-2010 school year will be posted online from Friday, February 6 through Friday, February 27. For information and to apply online, check the Quick Links section on the Employment website beginning February 6.

Catastrophic Leave Bank
Open Enrollment for the Catastrophic Leave Bank for employees in the Office-Technical and Business Services (OTBS), Operations-Support Services (OSS), and Paraeducators (PARA) Bargaining Units ended Saturday, January 31. New Location for Adult Education Office

CSA Contributions are Tax Deductible

This is reminder to all employees who are members of the Community Service Association (CSA) that your contributions are tax deductible. To determine the amount of your charitable contributions for 2008, refer to your December paycheck for your CSA total contribution. Employees who are not members but would like to join and support more than 100 local non-profit organizations can visit http://www.sandi.net/csa/.

Classified Employee of the Year Nominations

School sites and district offices are encouraged to nominate a deserving candidate for the 2009 Classified Man and Woman of the Year Adobe PDF awards. Each nominee must be a classified employee with at least three years of service in a monthly position. The deadline to submit a nomination petition Adobe PDF is April 3, by 5pm. “Revising your Single Plan for Student Achievement” Training

The Program Monitoring Department is offering a training that provides in-depth guidance for site teams consisting of principals, School Site Committee (SSC) chairs, and new or returning SSC members. The training will include information on the new SPSA template; the responsibilities of SSC members and the principal in developing the Single Plan for Student Achievement; getting input from all stakeholders; aligning schools goals with verifiable federal, state, and district data; developing SMART goals based on school/student data analysis; and making budget decision that improve student achievement. OASIS Tutors Available for K-4 Students

The Community Relations Department will be training new OASIS tutors January 27-February 4. The nationally-recognized OASIS Intergenerational Tutoring Program brings together older adults, ages 50 years +, and K-4 grade students to promote success and enjoyment of reading. Tutors commit to volunteering one hour per week and work one-on-one or in small groups with the same students(s) throughout the year. Students receive individual attention in reading and writing and are introduced to a caring role model, which helps promote self-esteem and builds a positive attitude towards learning.  For more information on how to request an OASIS tutor, call Nancy Hemmings at (619) 725-5597.

Free Event – “Engaging Students in Service”

In collaboration with the Community Relations Department, the Service Learning Council of Volunteer San Diego is hosting a free networking service event on Thursday, February 5, from 4 - 5:30 p.m. Participants will collaborate with educators, students and community organizations about simple and easy ways to engage students in service and how to make an impact in the community. Michele Lagui, from Project SUCCESS, will share information on how to engage students in service learning.   • Educational Technology Department Spring Semester Workshops
    Registration is underway for Educational Technology Spring workshops which begin Thursday, February 12. Workshops include Beginning PowerPoint; Intro to Moodle; Moodle 1; Moodle 2; Video in the Classroom; Google Collaborative Tools; Digital Images in the Classroom; Using Graphical Organizers; Using Online Databases and Streaming; Intro to Blogs; Wikis & Podcasting; Getting to Know Your Apple Computer; Getting to Know your Windows Computer.   • Earn National Board Certification, Master's Degree at the Same Time
    In partnership with National University, district teachers can pursue National Board Certification in 2009-10 while completing a Master's Degree in Teaching, a Master's with an Administrative Credential, or simply National Board Certification. Classes meet one night per week at a district school and online in a hybrid program. Apply for the February cohort no later than February 2, 2009.   • Earn a Tier I Preliminary Administrative Services Credential at USD
    The Educational Leadership Development Academy (ELDA) at the University of San Diego is searching for strong teachers, counselors and nurses who have worked in education at least three years and possess a clear California teaching credential.   • The Young Women’s Leadership Workshop
    Teen Truth Live: Bully, part of the Young Women’s Leadership Workshop series, will be held on Saturday, February 21, from 9-11:30 a.m., at Marina Village. The workshop is open to middle and high school girls, youth leaders and educators, women and mothers, and will focus on social issues that can lead to school violence and challenges students to think about how their reactions to these issues impact the lives of those around them.   • Free Parent Leadership Training

Science takes over the museums, cultural centers and the central corridor of Balboa Park with more than 300 hands-on activities, demonstrations, experiments, contests and performances. All events are interactive and geared to students of all ages and their families. Many of the major museums will be open for free that day.
