Summer School for traditional elementary and middle schools is tentatively scheduled for June 22 - July 17, 2009. The high school program is tentatively scheduled for June 22 - July 31. Assignments are contingent on the availability of funding and student enrollment, and may be cancelled if either funding or student enrollment is insufficient. Funding for Art and Music Programs
The Airborne® Teacher Trust FundTM invites elementary and middle school teachers to submit proposals for art and music programs that their schools are unable to fund. Teachers and their schools will receive grants from $200 to $10,000. Applications can be submitted year-round. To fill out the grant application, go online. Mandatory Reporting of Serious Injury, Illness or Death
District Administrative Procedure 5170 requires administrators, department heads & immediate supervisors to provide notification of all employee injuries to the Risk Management Department immediately. In addition, state regulations require that the Cal/OSHA enforcement unit be notified immediately by telephone (619-767-2280) or fax (619-767-2299) of any serious injury, illness, or death of an employee occurring in a place of employment or in connection with any employment. Immediately means as soon as practically possible but not longer than 8 hours after the employer knows or with diligent inquiry would have known of incident. If the employer can demonstrate that exigent circumstances exist, the time frame for the report may be made no longer than 24 hours after the incident. Serious injury or illness is defined as requiring inpatient hospitalization for more than 24 hours for other than medical observation; or the loss of any body part or serious degree of permanent disfigurement. It does not include any injury, illness or death caused by the commission of a Penal Code violation, except the violation of Section 385 of the Penal Code, or an accident on a public street or highway. Classified Employee Representative Selection
School sites are reminded to select a classified employee representative to be recognized at the Classified Employees of the Year ceremony. The event will be held as a special off-site Board meeting on Tuesday, May 19 at University City High School. Each representative will receive a copy of the board-adopted resolution to take back to his/her site. Please work with your staff in selecting a classified employee to represent your site/department, and complete the selection form. Classified Employee of the Year Nomination Deadline Extended

2009 Cox Communications Innovation in Education Grants
This year, the Cox Kids Foundation will award a total of $60,000 in grants (up to $5000 each) to public, charter and private middle and junior high schools (grades 6-8) located in the communities served by Cox Communications. Innovation in Education Awards
As a joint program of the Classroom of the Future Foundationand the San Diego County Office of Education, the annual Innovation in Education Awards celebrate innovative technology uses in schools, create momentum for continued innovation, and foster greater communication, coordination, and partnership between educators, administrators and parents. Award programs will be honored for their innovation, dedication and professionalism and receive cash stipends for their schools, ranging from $5,000 to $10,000. Build an Elementary School Website at No Cost
The Communications and Information Technology departments have a joint project that provides elementary schools with the tools and knowledge to create and manage their own websites at no cost. After attending two 3-hour training sessions, schools can develop and launch a website without special equipment or technical expertise. The next training will be held March 11 (Part 1), and March 18 (Part 2), from noon to 3 p.m., with open labs from 3-5 p.m. So far, 24 elementary schools have launched websites after this training. Take Advantage of the Instructional Media Center The Instructional Media Center (IMC) is a $15M teacher’s lending library developed with instructional materials and aligned with the curriculum. The library consists not only of books, but media, exhibits, kits, CD-roms, equipment and much more. A 20-minute presentation has been created to highlight the collections and services available to schools. Engaging Students in Service: Character Education Workshop
Volunteer San Diego is offering an “Engaging Students in Service: Character Education Workshop”” on Thursday, March 5 from 4-5:30 p.m.Participants will have the opportunity to brainstorm character education project ideas and receive resources and tools, including easy-to-use character education curriculum. California Preliminary Administrative Credential One option for receiving a California Preliminary Administrative Credential is to pass the School Leaders Licensure Assessment (SLLA). To assist prospective administrators in preparing for the SLLA, the Association of California School Administrators (ACSA) is offering the Aspiring California Educators (ACE) test preparation program. COSMOS Teacher Fellow Opportunity Teachers are encouraged to apply as Teacher Fellows for The California State Summer School for Mathematics & Science (COSMOS). Student applications are currently being accepted for the 4-week summer program at one of several UC universities. Teacher Fellows works with a team of university faculty to implement the academic portion of COSMOS. The commitment includes participation in all classroom and laboratory work as well as field trips, typically Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Fellows are paid positions, but housing is not provided. Food Services Essay, Poetry and Rap Contest Celebrating National Nutrition Month, the popular annual contest kicks off with the topic “What are the facts and myths about eating healthy food?” Open to all district K-12 students, entries will be judged on correctness and thoroughness of answer, clarity, creativity, spelling, grammar and presentation. First, second and third place prizes will be awarded to winners in each grade category (K-2, 3-5, 6-8, 9-12). Prizes range from Barnes & Noble gift certificates, to tickets and special activities at SeaWorld. Teachers also have the opportunity to win a Silver Passport to SeaWorld and schools with the most student entries will win an entire set of SeaWorld publications for their library. 2009 Water Conservation Film Contest
The City of San Diego has launched this new film contest, open to students in grades 11-12. The contest is sponsored by the City of San Diego Water Conservation Program and is intended to inspire students to create a visual message about water conservation and drought in the City of San Diego. 2009 Congressional Art Competition
Congresswoman Susan Davis invites high School students throughout the 53rd Congressional District to submit artwork for this annual contest , a great opportunity for young artists to showcase their work in the U.S. Capitol. This year’s theme is “Celebrating Unity Among Diversity.” The winning student will be invited to Washington, DC for the ribbon-cutting ceremony and will have their artwork displayed in the U.S. Capitol Building. COSMOS Summer Math and Science Program The California State Summer School for Mathematics & Science (COSMOS) is a four-week residential program for talented and motivated students who are completing grades 8-12. Students work side-by-side with university researchers and faculty to explore advanced topics that extend beyond the typical high school curriculum. COSMOS courses are hands-on and lab intensive emphasizing current research underway at the Universities of California. Students are invited to apply to one of the four campus programs. Asian Pacific American Network Scholarships for Seniors Kaiser Permanente's Asian Pacific American Network (KP-APAN) will award scholarships to a few eligible Southern California high school seniors graduating in the spring of 2009. Relatives of Kaiser Permanente physicians and employees, as well as members of the community in the region, are eligible for the scholarships. Each scholarship is worth $1,000. High school students graduating in the spring of 2009 must be of Asian descent and planning to attend an accredited college, university, trade or technical school in Fall 2009. They must also be residents in the Southern California Kaiser Permanente service area and have a minimum GPA of 3.50. The deadline for applications is April 10. Knight Scholarships for High School Seniors Service organization, The LEAGUE, is now accepting applications for the Knight scholarship—a national competition that awards three students $5000 each for their writings or reflections on civic experiences. 5th Annual San Diego Race for Autism
The 5th Annual Race for Autism in scenic Balboa Park will take place on Saturday, March 28 from 7 -11 a.m., including a 5K timed race, 5K fun run/walk and a 1-mile family fun walk. Cost is $15 for children, $25 for adults, with higher fees after March 21. Activities include a free children's activity area and resource fair. All registered participants receive a race t-shirt and goodie bag. Kids twelve and under receive a commemorative medal. Proceeds of the race fund outreach, research and educational programs for children with autism in San Diego as well as the San Diego Autism Teacher’s Fund.
