Adolescent Mental Health Presentation for Staff and Parents
This Wednesday, May 20, Lisa Ehrlichman, RN, BSN, M.Ed. will be presenting Could There Be Something Going on Besides ADHD? in the Monroe Clark Middle School auditorium from 3-4:45 p.m. Ehrlichman is the La Jolla High School nurse and the chair for the California School Nurse Association’s Adolescent Health committee. Mental health issues are the number one reason that adolescents are absent from school. Ehrlichman will share her knowledge and expertise in this area. Spanish translation will be available. Summer School Staffing
A second posting for Summer School positions is online through May 20. Certificated staff members at year-round and traditional schools are encouraged to apply. If you applied during the March posting for summer school, you do not need to reapply. Summer School assignments are contingent on the availability of funding and student enrollment, and may be cancelled if either funding or student enrollment is insufficient.

Hire-A-Youth Summer Internship Program
San Diego Unified departments and divisions have the opportunity to influence the career experience of our future workforce, while helping students secure summer employment, with participation in the federally-funded Work Investment Act (WlA) Summer Hire-A-Youth Internship Program. The goal is to provide approximately 600 SDUSD students, ages 14 to 21, with paid summer work. Students will earn $8-10 per/hour and will be paid by San Diego Unified with federal funds provided by the program. Submit an Intern Request Form by Friday, May 29. Community Service Association (CSA) is the district employees' charitable organization providing funding to nonprofit agencies throughout San Diego County. The Board of Directors is comprised of 10 members (2 Administrators, 5 Certificated, and 3 Classified staff members) .Three seats (1 Administrator 1 Certificated and 1 Classified) on the board will become vacant June 30, due to retirements. SDCOE’s First-Ever Permanent Student Art Exhibition
District teachers are invited to participate in the first-ever San Diego County Office of Education (SDCOE) Permanent Student Art Exhibitionby submitting student art that represents excellence in creative expression by young artists. Art selected for the permanent exhibition will be on display indefinitely and will become part of the permanent collection and property of SDCOE. Hundreds of SDCOE visitors and employees will see this exhibit. The submission deadline is Friday, May 29. District Presenters needed for 2009 New ERAA Conference
The 6th annual Everyone Recommitting to Academic Achievement (ERAA) Conference is scheduled for Saturday, August 22 from 8 a.m. to noon, at Lincoln High School. District employees are invited to conduct workshops on a variety of topics to support student learning and development. The conference goals are to 1) Help parents partner with schools; 2) Help students to be successful at school and at home; and 3) Help families live a healthy lifestyle. Workshops will range from 45 minutes to 1 hour. Interested staff can fill out the Workshop Presenter Form and return it by June 1. Discover Program Summer Sessions Would you like to share your knowledge and expertise with other professionals and earn extra income? The Discover Program is seeking instructors to develop and teach classes to certificated and classified employees during the 2008-09 Summer Sessions (Jul.-Sep.’09) and throughout the year. Instructors are paid at a rate of $45.29 per hour for teaching time and $30.57 for preparation time spent outside of assigned workday.

5th Annual San Diego County Early Care & Development Inclusion Institute Learn how to create an inclusive environment in your classroom/program, as the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) presents a Miller Early Childhood Initiative workshop. The goal of the initiative is to assist caregivers, educators and families in creating and sustaining bias-free early childhood programs and homes that encourage children to appreciate diversity at an age when the seeds of prejudice can begin to take root. Character Matters Conference The University of San Diego will hold the Character Matters Conference June 30-July 1, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Teachers, principals, counselors and administrators are invited to attend. Both graduate credit and professional development units are available for those who attend both days of the conference and participate in four on-line sessions. Advocating For Your Child, Preventing Conflict in SpecialEducation
Nick Martin, founder and president of The Center for Accord, Inc., is a staff development and conflict resolution specialist. He will be presenting a training for parents on Advocating For Your Child, Preventing Conflict in Special Education. Two trainings will be offered on May 26, at Wiggin Center, the first from 10 a.m.-12:00 p.m.; the second from 7-9 p.m. Training is free to parents. Translation services will be available at both sessions for Spanish, and other languages upon request. Registration deadline is Thursday, May 21.

SCPA Spring Music Concert The San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts (SCPA) will present its final music concert of the school year, the Spring Music Concert, May 19-21 at 7 p.m. each evening, in the Florence Johnson Grand Theatre. will take place on Thursday, June 18, at the Mission Valley Resort.
