California Fire Code requires that chairs set-up for commencement ceremonies and similar events must be tied together if they are not fixed to the floor. Events with 300 chairs or less are exempt. The requirement prevents chairs from being jostled about and impeding egress in the event of an emergency. The fire department prefers that all chairs be bonded together, however the code requires chairs to be bonded in groups of 3 or more. Please contact Glenn Boogren at the Risk Management Department with questions at (858) 637-3698 or gboogren@sandi.net .
