Bell Times Unchanged for Majority of Schools |
Principals are reminded to alert families and school communities that bell times for the majority of San Diego Unified will be unchanged in 2009-10. Exceptions include changes to all bell times for CPMA, and 43 schools with minor changes to modified day schedules or lunch periods that were agreed upon outside of Board action. View a complete list of updated bell times online ( Staff | Parents ) and advise families accordingly. |

Updated TB Testing |
The 2009 TB Testing Summer Schedule is now available for those in need of TB testing. Notices were recently sent out that contained last year’s schedule. Please refer to the updated schedule provided. TB testing requires two visits to administer and read the test within a 48-hour period. |

- Educational Technology Summer Workshops

- Mathematics Summer PD Registration
Dates and locations have been determined for Mathematics Professional Development for the new textbook adoption. Teachers may choose between a two-day training that focuses on the textbook and technology, or a five-day training (SB 472) that includes the above and in-depth training on the state framework. - District Purchase Card Training
District Purchase Card training will be held from 10 a.m. to noon, August 27, September 16, October 14 and November 18 at the Ed Center auditorium. - Service Learning Training/Discover Course
ExcelYouthZone, in partnership with Community Relations, is offering a comprehensive service learning training on Wednesday, July 29, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the San Diego County Office of Education. The training will include information on the basics of service learning and how it is different from community service. Participants will learn how to integrate service learning into classroom curriculum and will be provided resources and support for service projects. Administrators, teachers and staff working with youth are welcome to attend. This training is also being offered as a Discover Course for SDUSD employees. - Discover Program – Summer-Fall Sessions
The Discover Program is seeking instructors to develop and teach classes to certificated and classified employees during the Summer-Fall Sessions (Jul.-Dec.’09) and throughout the year. Instructors are paid at a rate of $45.29 per hour for teaching time and $30.57 for preparation time spent outside of assigned workday.

- Holocaust Living History Workshop at UCSD
The Holocaust Living History Workshop is a cooperative effort of the UCSD libraries and the Judaic Studies Program. The Visual History Archive is an online collection of 52,000 recorded interviews with Holocaust survivors and witnesses. SDUSD faculty and staff are invited to attend one of several Wednesday trainings held at UCSD’s Geisel Library, from 5-7 p.m. Learn how to use the archive to supplement classroom activities or enhance student projects. - Earn National Board Certification, Master's Degree at the Same Time
In partnership with National University, district teachers can pursue National Board Certification in 2009-10 while completing a Master's Degree in Teaching, a Master's with an Administrative Credential, or simply National Board Certification. Classes meet one night per week at Birney Elementary and online in a hybrid program. Student loan repayment scholarships are available for teachers with up to 5 years of teaching experience in math, science, or history, all levels, through Americorps (up to 15 candidates in 09-10). Teachers who want to apply for National Board Certification with up to $2,000 fee support through National University must enroll by September 1. - Let’s Go Fishing
A free Young Anglers Tournament will be held at the Shelter Island Pier on Saturday, July 25, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Open to all children, ages 6-15, the tournament is presented by the International Game Fish Association and the San Diego Sportsfishing Council. Prizes are provided by a host of community supporters. Participants must be accompanied by an adult and are encouraged to bring their own fishing gear (a limited supply of fishing gear is available). - 2009-10 San Diego Symphony Young People's Concerts
Start planning now to introduce students to the San Diego Symphony Young People’s Concert Series:
- November 4 and 5, 2009; 9:45 and 11:15 a.m. each day; Behold the Bold Umbrellaphant, based on the book by Jack Prelutsky
- April 7 and 8, 2010; 9:45 and 11:15 a.m. each day; Peter and the Wolf

Clairemont High “Theatre-Alive” Summer Conservatory
The public is welcome to attend a performance by the "Theatre-Alive" Summer conservatory on July 23 and 24, at 6 p.m., in the Clairemont High Theatre. The 21st Century Grant-funded program challenged participating students to write essays based on issues facing young San Diegans today, ranging from teen pregnancy, to self image and drug abuse. The essays have been turned into live scenes for the July performances.
