Oasis Tutors Available for K-4 Students
The Community Relations Department will be training new OASIS tutors through October 1. The OASIS Intergenerational Tutoring Program brings together older adults, ages 50 years+, and K-4 grade students to promote success and enjoyment of reading. Tutors commit to volunteering one hour per week and work one-to-one or in small groups with the same students(s) throughout the year. Mandatory Training for Campus Security Assistants
The district will be providing a mandatory three-day workshop for Campus Security Assistants who have not gone through the training. The full series provides the 24 hours of training required by the Education Code Section 38001.5 for Campus Security Assistants. Participants must attend all three days in order to receive credit. Training will be held October 6, 7 and 8, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the Education Center, Annex 9 Testing room. Employees must register by October 1. Connect-ED Authorized Users
School principals were recently sent an e-mail request by Blackboard-Connect to verify all authorized users of the school-wide system by September 30. Only individuals confirmed by the principal will have access in the 2009-10 school year. All other users will be deleted from the system for security purposes. Step Up to the Challenge
Southern California SchoolsVEBA announces StepUp to the Challenge, encouraging participants to walk extra flights of stairs. Adding a few more steps to your daily routine increases the amount of your physical activity and improves your overall health and well-being. The challenge runs September 28 through November 22. Free K-5 Homework Toolkits in October
The Ballard Parent Center is providing elementary schools free homework toolkits to assist with conducting homework workshops for parents. Participating school will receive a copy of the PowerPoint presentation or transparencies and parent handout masters in English and Spanish. Enrollment for SES Free Tutoring Through September 30
Supplemental Educational Services (SES) Free Tutoring Booklets were mailed to all eligible students in July. (Only schools in year 2 or more for 2009-10 are eligible to receive SES). Five Meet the Providers Fairs for Parents (English | Spanish) have been scheduled during the month of September to assist parents in making informed decisions. District Purchase Card Training
District Purchase Card training will be held from 10 a.m. to noon, on October 21 and November 18, in the Ed Center auditorium. Training is required for all new card holders, approvers or reconcilers who have not yet attended this class. CSET Prep Courses Teacher Preparation and Induction will offer California Subject Examinations for Teacher (CSET) Prep Courses to prepare teachers for the November 7 exam. Classes begin Thursday, October 8. Courses are available in Single Subject English, Mathematics, Science and Multiple Subjects. Courses are free for district employees; $60 for Charter schools and all others. Register deadline is 5 p.m. on Thursday, October 1. "Each One - Teach Many" Service-Learning Networking Event
Excel Youth Zone, a partner with the Community Relations Department, is hosting a free service-learning networking event onThursday, October 8, from 4:30-6:30 p.m., at Explorer Elementary School in Liberty Station. The event will highlight a student exhibition of service-learning projects focusing on character education, PeaceJam, the environment and participation in a book project for refugee children in Uganda. A panel of students will share their inspiring stories of service and answer questions about their experiences. The North Coastal Consortium for Special Education (NCCSE) Workshop
The NCCSE presents a workshop for general and special education teachers working with moderate to severe students in general education classrooms. The two half-day sessions will be held on October 1 and December 7. Participants must attend both session and have administrator’s approval. Prudential Spirit of Community Awards for Grades 5-12 The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program is the United States' largest youth recognition program based exclusively on volunteer community service. The program was created in 1995 to honor middle level and high school students for outstanding service to others at the local, state, and national level.
